I remember that university President. iirc, they were emboldened by how relatively simple it was to shitcan librarians at their prior workplace and thought they could take that easy-breezy approach to Real Faculty. Nah.

In 2014, the President and Provost of U of S tried to fire a Dean with tenure both as Dean and as an academic. They both ended up losing their positions over that. On present evidence, it's not unreasonable to think that the UW Board tried something similar here.

🎆 What a way to close out 2025 as we celebrate PKP's Founder, John Willinsky, and his appointment to the Order of Canada for more than 25 years of dedication to #OpenAccess and #PublicKnowledge!

I am honoured to announce I’ve been appointed as a member to the Order of Canada. Thank you to everyone for the support! I dedicate this to my late Mom who taught me so much about history, local independent media & research. I know that she would be, like me, screaming with joy! #orderofcanada

"Learn to code." Did you? "AI makes entry coding jobs replaceable." The pivot between these positions was immediate and without apology. All these kids lied to about a future with wage security, who structured their education and life around that promise, had it yanked in a few years.

There’s no pitch for genAI in the classroom that doesn’t boil down to “it’s everywhere,” or that takes education as more than job training, or, consequently, that actually argues for genAI as a tool that has a distinct function in education.

It’s not educators who have their heads in the sand here.

I have a theory that one big reason llms get so much hype is that due to financialization the people in charge of tech companies are finance grifters who have never once, ever, used sed or awk or grep and would be totally unable to describe how they work.

When I was at Chicago amtrak about a decade ago I actually saw one of these cars on the track, hooked up, and I was *absolutely flummoxed*. It was *so swanky*. Just a gorgeous thing.
The clearest demonstration to me that the rich in this country are boring, vapid, thoughtless dipshits is the fact that you can rent (or buy) your own TRAIN CAR and have Amtrak hook you up to existing lines and drive you around all the time and none of these scum do it. Fucking waste.

Pretty sure there's not gonna be a TN-1 work permit this time next year. This is a huge bummer.

the analogy I use with friends and family all the time is the jump from collegiate to professional sports. as soon as I explain it that way, it clicks in their brains what the academic job market is like.
THERE ARE NO JOBS IN ACADEMIA! NO JOBS! DOZENS OF HYPER QUALIFIED APPLICANTS PER JOB!

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.

I think it's sweet that the oldest surviving printed book in the world - the Diamond Sutra - is also the oldest creative work explicitly released into the public domain, with a colophon at the end that says it was created for universal free distribution.

One of McDonald’s first attempts at a kids meal was the “Mayor McCheese Bag,” a cheeseburger, fries and Cookies (at regular menu prices), served in a special bag. This is a countertop sign from the promotion… the only survivor I’ve ever seen outside of the McD’s archives. (1975)

Yeah, in re: librarians as angels who will save civilization etc, if my 30 years in the industry didn't already sort of inure me to this magical thinking, the recent conversion of *so many of them* into copyright maximalists for Some Reason sure would.
