AWARDS ELIGIBILITY WHATNOT

it has come to my attention that despite having been once again thrust into the pilot's seat for full-time, live-in caregiving work, I DID actually successfully write words this year, and some of them were even published!

Not many, but all of them something I'm proud of:

we have a philosophy of not talking much about the specifics as a business because i don't really think it's the reason to buy our stuff but I can tell you that it is not only doable to give a large portion of profits back to the creative teams but in fact rocks and feels good to do it

this year alone we sent out about $50k in royalties for triangle agency work ✌️if your games aren't making money for the people who made then why sell them at all
In Tabletop Roleplaying Games the idea of royalties is still relatively new; more of us at the publishing level need to be thinking about ways to undermine the existing paradigm and build to sustain our comrades and collaborators in the long term and give them the fruits of their own labor
My wife had a single line in Kung Fu Panda 17 years ago and still gets checks every few months. Most are way smaller than this, but devs get $0 even though the games we work on will likely be sold for 10+ years soooo yeah.

You can't cite one single successful AI marketing campaign for a book, and yet insist that it is "necessary" for people to be competitive.

Finally, if you want to know why the letter makes so many general points but cannot identify a specific usage that people know and love?

It's because the letter was AI generated.

Anyway here is the most successful promo I've ever done for a book.

YOU DO NOT NEED AI.

None of this is responsible. None of this is ethical. And--importantly--none of this is actually competitive.

Do not believe anyone who tells you that AI schlock marketing is what will win you an advantage.

That person does not care if you sell books; they want to sell you AI schlock marketing.

The entire thesis here is "hey, do you realize how many people could choose to not use labor from human beings if they instead used the extruded meat product trained on labor from those same human beings?"

"Use AI for translations"

Hey, who was doing translations before? How did we train AI to do translations? Who was the author of the translations that were fed into AI?

Ah, I see, another "ethical" use.

oh my god please read your fucking contracts and ask a human being about things you don't understand.

Was AI trained on their prior output? Yeah, it was?

Okay, thanks, fuck off.

"this doesn't replace creative labor"

Really! Who was doing it before? Was it a human being? Was that human being performing labor? Was it in a creative capacity?

Yeah?

Do you want your book to sell?

DO NOT LET AI WRITE YOUR BLURBS

OR YOUR PROMOTION

OR YOUR MARKETING

I don't think you could come up with a list more designed to inflame sentiments than "here is a list of things that publishers MUST use AI to do and remain competitive, but don't worry, this isn't pushing out creative labor"

Walking through the tribeca area many years ago with my favorite coworker, i got a head-nod from a cool-looking older lady with incredible hair and glasses walking past us in the other direction

I knew her face but couldn't place her & thankfully Bill elbowed me afterward: "That was Patti Smith!!"
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Please Quote this with your most minor celebrity interaction

I shrieked out loud when I saw @alyssacolelit.bsky.social’s phenomenal An Extraordinary Union on this list. If you’re a historical romance reader (or a historical fiction reader open to romance reading) who hasn’t read that series you should absolutely be snagging yourself a copy. It’s an all timer!

Next up for a New Year-themed poem is Kwame Dawes' New Year’s Eve in Addis: poets.org/poem/new-yea...
"On New Year’s Eve, the shops are emptying,
the pavements are covered with the aromatic
green of cut grass, & women sell bundles
of...welcome carpets & dry firewood."
