This is really impressive. They invented racism.
A new paper suggests a photo can tell a recruiter much about an applicant’s personality
Should facial analysis help determine whom companies hire?

We go to sleep in a better country than we woke up in. Thank you to everyone who worked for these coast-to-coast victories, for this utter repudiation of Trumpism, for economic justice and a country for all of us, not for white supremacy.

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

If you’re assigning articles you should have students download the link from the library instead of just posting a PDF to increase the author’s metrics and the journal’s as well.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

I found this a really illuminating thread on what demonstrations do and why they matter.
In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

New POLITICO report: Trump admin is “exploring options to sell parts of the government’s $1.6T student loan portfolio to the private market.”
We're announcing our willingness to purchase the portfolio for its market value. We will then subsequently cancel the debt.

the real innovation here seems to be in moving ai slop from a banal, low quality, and mostly stupid digital pollutant to something that's potentially very dangerous
I told OpenAI's Sora to make a video showing "Body cam footage of cops arresting a dark skinned man in a department store." It took less than a minute.

Well. It's not Red Dead Redemption 2, but it's like one of three video games I'd genuinely consider good.

I’ve done this for 2 weeks now and it *absolutely rules*. Best class discussions I’ve ever had. Best engagement with readings. They write in this worksheet for 15 minutes, then talk about their responses in groups of 3-4, then groups share with the whole class, and *then* we talk about the readings
Updating my comparative public admin seminar class—which was decimated by AI last year—to maybe be a little more LLM-proof by adding a 20–30 minute start-of-class writing & discussion activity. Will it work? Who knows! Full details and PDF here: governancef25.classes.andrewheiss.com/assignment/c...

What's the best movie about journalism where they get all the little procedural details correct?
The Paper and The Post are quite good in that respect
I know people usually answer All the President's Men or Spotlight, but i'm wondering if there are some less well known ones that I'm missing
