I guess it's time for a reintroduction!

Software developer from South Wales. Used to be a physicist, always will be one at heart. Got a PhD and everything.

Also a musician (violin/fiddle).

Recently dived into the Teletext enthusiast world, and fused that with Trek on my very own Teletext service!
Still mulling about the best way to sort out uneven column lengths, but there've been other tweaks to enhance the look/feel:
- descriptions streamlined, not shown for news, and only after 7pm for most programmes
- films now identified, and outlined with a rectangle

I did an experiment to see if I could use the EPG data from my TVHeadend Raspberry Pi to produce a recreation of a newspaper TV guide. Turns out I can, and I have.

Started dabbling with EPG XML data from my TVHeadend the other day, and had a random thought: I wonder if anyone's made a recreation of the classic Sky Digibox EPG?

Wonder no more...

Did I spontaneously decide to buy a second-hand motherboard and RAM, and a brand-new compatible cooler, just to finally test a CPU that I bought in January 2024? Yup.

Building up the PC testbench slowly.

Got a new ATX PSU for one of my PCs, which freed up the old one to be used here.

Oh Grace, I am so sorry Ash has let the side down: the men's side and the Wales side. #MAFSUK

Now that there's a retro motherboard on the way to test, it made sense to finally get around to assembling my open frame testbench, that I bought in...*checks notes*...January...

My socials: a clunky fusion of family photos, food, gigs, comedy, technophilia, and tumbleweed (when I don't post for weeks).

Made huge strides with my anachronistic analogue TV simulator last night!

RPi 3 TVHeadend uses two Realtek RTL2832 DVB-T tuners to get BBC1/2, ITV1, S4C, Channel 4/5 SD feeds and stream to six RPi 1s running OMXPlayer and VBIT2 for teletext.

Bonus: DVB HAT lets me watch TV anywhere on my LAN, too!

My single-tuner TVHeadend just became triple-tuner (at least for SD content)!

Had some cheap DVB-T tuners that were left unused from a project that never came together years ago. It's been so long, in fact, that one of the plastic cases disintegrated, but handily this means I can stack them neatly.

I finally killed it with fire!

If you've been getting this 'QUIC protocol' error in Google Chrome, you can stop it by navigating to chrome://flags/, searching for 'quic', selecting 'disabled' in the 'Experimental QUIC protocol' dropdown, then clicking the relaunch button at the bottom.

Last night was some of my best work: I successfully prepared air-fried pigs-in-blankets in a silicone basket.

Not sure if there's more of a process involved, or if Michelin routinely read public social media posts and the star will be sent automatically?

Just to let everyone know, I finally turned off the irrelevant / out-of-date automatic chatbot messages on my Twitch chat.

The stream was over three weeks ago.

But hey, at least they're now switched off in time for next year's stream!

🤣

Mr. I Don't Stream (Regularly) Any More is apparently unable to resist previewing how the new totally-not-a-stream room looks on webcam with the new purple curtains.

Outdoor coat because I'd only just turned the heater on (before anyone asks).

For my #ChunkyFringe livestreams this year, I once again used a Smarty data-only SIM in a 4G router from AliExpress, and once again...it...just...worked!

Rarely does technology behave so well, but it really was insert SIM, activate on app...minutes later...internet!

Very advert said "pay no interest".

I mean, I already wasn't paying any interest in getting either a Playstation 5 or a Meta Quest headset.

Saved me the best part of a grand!

The BBC are accidentally running the subtitles to Mrs Marple over the Mercury Prize, and it’s rather wonderful. A few of lines could plausibly have been written by Jarvis.

Just did a mental tally of how many Raspberry Pis I now own...

TVHeadend with DVB HAT, six for teletext / analogue TV, internal telephone exchange, Home Assistant, web server, GPi Case, my original one, three spares that don't quite work properly, and the unfinished mini desktop teletext TV...

16.

Managed to get my anachronistic analogue TV simulator a step closer to reality: a Raspberry Pi with a DVB HAT running TVHeadend grabs the terrestrial TV feeds, and Pis running OMXPlayer and VBIT2 output video and teletext respectively, which get passed to UHF modulators and distributed house-wide.

I guess this is another element I can add to what I'm calling my "90s simulator".

In different parts of the house, I have an analogue of analogue TV (present day BBC/ITV/4/5 in letterboxed SD) with modern-day teletext, a dial-up internet server, and now MSN.

One day, I want this all in one room 😊

Accidentally bought some single-use microSD cards!

I've usually been pretty good at not falling foul of the "buy cheap, buy twice" mantra, but not this time.

When the first card failed, I thought it was just bad luck, but when the second hard-failed as well, after only a few minutes of use...😢

I remember having to say this on TwiXter, but now I'm having to say it on Bluesky.

Please keep in mind, when you're making commentary on events, that what might seem like huge news with plenty of obvious context to you, could be a complete unknown to others.

This time, it's the Bitmap Books thing.
