I guess it's time for a reintroduction!

Software developer from South Wales. Used to be a physicist, always will be one at heart. Got a PhD and everything.

Also a musician (violin/fiddle).

Recently dived into the Teletext enthusiast world, and fused that with Trek on my very own Teletext service!
Listening to BBC Radio Wales while food is cooking, on my big present to mum: a Telefunken Partysound R Automatic.

"Up next on ITV2, Inside M&S at Christmas."

My genuine first thought: "Good gosh, that's a fast turnaround...have they really made a documentary about the nefarious goings-on in the former Neath store already?!"

When I was picking up a few extra pressies, I couldn't resist buying myself this mini nativity. It can't be more than about two inches high. Maybe I'm choosing to let it symbolise that it's the little things that help us get through the big things?

Unexpected everyday sexism in the run up to Christmas! After I tried this out to check it was working, I needed to let off a bit of steam as well...

I've always loved Star Trek: The Next Generation, and decided to do a deep dive into how the VFX teams created the effects in the days before digital compositing and 3D rendering. I learned show much and wanted to share it.

Well, that's the attic Christmas tree sorted.

Solar charging works with sunshine?! Well, I'll be blown!

Definitely buying this one vs. all the other products that don't explicitly state whether or not they do!

My Wales-centric old-school "anachronistic analogue" Freeview TV guide is back online!

Visited three different B&M Stores in the space of an hour, and accidentally got promoted to Area Manager.

It's here...wish me luck! My Raspberry Pi server might be back online in time for Christmas.

The record to beat is eleven months...

I was already using Log2RAM, but since discovered you can stop it backing up the logs to disk every hour. So, even though this is a max endurance card, I'll do that.

My website is currently down. I'm very aware of why. It's because the SD card in my Raspberry Pi server decided to go end-of-life / read-only this afternoon 🙃

I've imaged it, and I've invested in a max endurance card. Hopefully I can just transfer the image to it when it arrives.

I do think cutting the cash ISA limit is wrong. However, the annual probability of me hitting even the new cash ISA limit before retirement is still zero.

Happy just-over-a-year of my Raspberry Pi self-hosting running stably!

Decided to celebrate by deciding to install stuff as an experiment which practically ground it to a halt just as my most popular ever Bluesky/Mastodon post was going practically viral.

Took me two evenings, but it's fixed now!
It has taken me nearly 11 months! 🤣

Had issues recently where it was randomly falling over, and about 17 pages of notes on what the problem *wasn't*, from all the fixes I tried.

Started over last week, and third time lucky, it's running stable.

Gained a new case and HAT since then from Waveshare.

Ahh, so I should've checked Webfax before thinking that the blips throwing my internal house-wide anachronistic analogue TV out of whack were anything to do with my Raspberry Pis or my aerial positioning...could have just been planned maintenance...d'oh...I've been fiddling for ages!

The item I wanted to buy again on Amazon is nearly double what I paid for it the first time, so I waited for Black Friday Week to start.

It's gone up by £3 🤣

Just trying to put the leccy meter reading in for mum and dad, mun...how has the world come to this?! 🤣

"Isn't a 'single point of failure' something that's right there, in Information Technology 101, as something we're supposed to try to avoid having?"

"Shh. I'm sure it'll be fine."

Just reminding future me to listen to my own advice, in case I forget.

This was in response to someone on Threads, nearing 40, panicking and wondering if it was too late to start over, feeling as though they'd "missed their life".

What was supposed to be a quick PSU and graphics card swap turned into a complete disassembly, when it wouldn't power up after a dusting (even though the LED was on).

Forums said it'd be highly likely something knocked (off), but didn't realise this CMOS jumper was missing until I read the manual!

Still mulling about the best way to sort out uneven column lengths, but there've been other tweaks to enhance the look/feel:
- descriptions streamlined, not shown for news, and only after 7pm for most programmes
- films now identified, and outlined with a rectangle

I did an experiment to see if I could use the EPG data from my TVHeadend Raspberry Pi to produce a recreation of a newspaper TV guide. Turns out I can, and I have.

Started dabbling with EPG XML data from my TVHeadend the other day, and had a random thought: I wonder if anyone's made a recreation of the classic Sky Digibox EPG?

Wonder no more...
