Serial Experiments Lain is one of the only anime pretty much everyone agrees should be watched on VHS.

Just noticed on an old VHS that Robert Patrick was wearing a NIN shirt when he was 3D scanned for the T-1000. That would have been 1990, so he was proudly supporting his brother Richard Patrick, who was in a new band called Nine Inch Nails at the time.

my first vhs movie (slap shot) cost me $75
Hold up.
I just saw an ad for the Muppet Christmas Carol VHS tape (I presume 1993). It said $22.99.
Did people really pay $23 in 90s money for tapes?! (We were poor, we only had a few and some probably bootlegged ones.)

desperate for new creepypasta analog horror content, a weary nation turns to a somewhat dirty looking VHS copy of The Postman that inexplicably also has half of Waterworld on it

There's exactly one extremely rough VHS rip of this out there that was probably sourced from a TV broadcast.

VHS tapes were hugely popular. Besides film and TV releases people would buy blank VHS tapes and record TV over them. The niche pre-DVD home video market were laserdiscs, preferred by videophiles but never a hit with the general public, DVDs were basically successful laserdiscs.
No? Obviously people bought VHS tapes, it’s not like Suncoast was selling popcorn. And bonus material on DVDs wasn’t a scam.

When I was growing up my dad was in the ad business and had this movie on VHS, which was weird for an American, but this scene imprinted on me permanently. youtu.be/6iAecAtJVdE?...
