Just reminding future me to listen to my own advice, in case I forget.

This was in response to someone on Threads, nearing 40, panicking and wondering if it was too late to start over, feeling as though they'd "missed their life".
For me, "starting over" was actually finding my way back to the things I'd lost and already found fulfilling, in the process of trying to aimlessly chase the life I thought I was missing as I hurtled towards 40, rediscovering my peace, and realising I never want to lose it again. Finding new things is great, but also don't be afraid to pick back up some of the things you put down years ago, and never meant to leave there for so long.

I did clock the bare pins, but I've had this motherboard so long, I didn't think any more of it, since some motherboards have bare pins you only add the jumper to when clearing the CMOS, or the "stowed position" does nothing.

In this case, a missing jumper makes it present as a dead motherboard! 😮

What was supposed to be a quick PSU and graphics card swap turned into a complete disassembly, when it wouldn't power up after a dusting (even though the LED was on).

Forums said it'd be highly likely something knocked (off), but didn't realise this CMOS jumper was missing until I read the manual!

Still mulling about the best way to sort out uneven column lengths, but there've been other tweaks to enhance the look/feel:
- descriptions streamlined, not shown for news, and only after 7pm for most programmes
- films now identified, and outlined with a rectangle

A retro newspaper-style TV guide, with the day of the week in large blocky letters with drop shadow on a stripey background as the heading, and columns for BBC One Wales, BBC Two Wales, ITV1 Wales, S4C, and Channel 5. TV programmes run from 6am in each column, with the time and title in bold, followed by a description in lighter text for many programmes, with little to no space between, replicating the typical visual style of newspaper listings. Films are highlighted by a rectangular outline.

I did an experiment to see if I could use the EPG data from my TVHeadend Raspberry Pi to produce a recreation of a newspaper TV guide. Turns out I can, and I have.

Did I spontaneously decide to buy a second-hand motherboard and RAM, and a brand-new compatible cooler, just to finally test a CPU that I bought in January 2024? Yup.

This camera hasn't picked it up perfectly in all cases, but the frame rate and deinterlacing are working really well to my eyes.

I've compromised and gone for 14:9 letterboxing to emulate the compromise we had during digital switchover on some analogue channels.

Made huge strides with my anachronistic analogue TV simulator last night!

RPi 3 TVHeadend uses two Realtek RTL2832 DVB-T tuners to get BBC1/2, ITV1, S4C, Channel 4/5 SD feeds and stream to six RPi 1s running OMXPlayer and VBIT2 for teletext.

Bonus: DVB HAT lets me watch TV anywhere on my LAN, too!

My single-tuner TVHeadend just became triple-tuner (at least for SD content)!

Had some cheap DVB-T tuners that were left unused from a project that never came together years ago. It's been so long, in fact, that one of the plastic cases disintegrated, but handily this means I can stack them neatly.

I finally killed it with fire!

If you've been getting this 'QUIC protocol' error in Google Chrome, you can stop it by navigating to chrome://flags/, searching for 'quic', selecting 'disabled' in the 'Experimental QUIC protocol' dropdown, then clicking the relaunch button at the bottom.

Mr. I Don't Stream (Regularly) Any More is apparently unable to resist previewing how the new totally-not-a-stream room looks on webcam with the new purple curtains.

Outdoor coat because I'd only just turned the heater on (before anyone asks).
Me sat in a thick green outdoor coat in front of a pair of closed purple velvet curtains. Behind my right shoulder is a wooden corner shelf, rear-illuminated in purple. On the top shelf is a large RGB clock (displaying the time 19:39) on top of a neon-style LED 'on air' light (text in red surrounded by a white rounded rectangle, embedded in clear plastic), next to a PlayStation light (not turned on, comprising the iconic square, triangle, cross and circle in a two-by-two grid). Managed to get my anachronistic analogue TV simulator a step closer to reality: a Raspberry Pi with a DVB HAT running TVHeadend grabs the terrestrial TV feeds, and Pis running OMXPlayer and VBIT2 output video and teletext respectively, which get passed to UHF modulators and distributed house-wide.

Accidentally bought some single-use microSD cards!

I've usually been pretty good at not falling foul of the "buy cheap, buy twice" mantra, but not this time.

When the first card failed, I thought it was just bad luck, but when the second hard-failed as well, after only a few minutes of use...😢

My recollections from jumping on the #teletext bandwagon in 2023, after missing out on the comeback event in 2022 due to uni, relieved that I hadn't missed my last chance.

And if all goes to plan, I'll be back in Harrow this Saturday for #ChunkyFringe 2025!

A few years ago, I found a random reference to a one-off teletext get-together that had happened even more years prior, where updates had been beamed to a few venues using TVs which had been adapted to receive teletext via the internet. "That's so cool," I thought, "I didn't know you could even do that!" And so began a journey down a rabbit hole of nostalgia. There were VBITs and inserters and packet data and teletext recovery from VHS?! Fastext links for 'Zine 1 (red), Nemboozle! (green), Twitch (yellow), Gigs (blue).
