Siouxsie took on an institution that failed to protect her and other academics from death threats, whilst doing fantastic #scicomm for the common good. She won against UOA. And is left with a house-size debt even after being awarded costs. Give a little back if you can 💚 🚨
At a time when academics are under sustained right-wing attack, Dr Siouxsie Wiles stood up to the neoliberal regime of university management and won, but it came at a cost. If you can, please consider supporting Siouxsie, one of the most courageous scholars I know.

Having seen the very moving film last night with a Q&A from Anna and Sonya, I'm very aware of the impact of lax H&S rules on families and communities. #StandWithPike

When the heroes at Stats NZ are screaming at the world to take notice. A clear separation between the cost of living for the wealthy and sorted folks who are seeing a rapid easing, and the bottom-feeders who are getting properly screwed.

Why the hell are financial assets like shares excluded from Labour’s capital gains tax? Isn’t the majority of the super rich’s wealth held in shares? #nzpol

Labour just went for CGT-lite. It won't raise much money & won’t change the incentives in our housing-market-with-bits-tacked-on economy. It’s focus-group-hugging performative politics. It tells low wage renters flying to Australia: not much will ever change. It says; ‘Fly my pretties. Fly’. #nzpol
Tuesday's Chorus: Where's the solar & batteries? And a proper CGT?
30% of dairy farmers in Southland & Otago still without power five days after wild winds flattened power poles; Locals surprised & farmers scramble for diesel generators; Labour goes for CGT-lite

Anyone can become disabled.

Anyone can lose their job.

Anyone can become homeless.

Anyone can go hungry.

These are not moral failings. They can happen in an instant.

Most people are far closer to living in poverty than they realize.

We must fight for one another & for the most vulnerable.

Just got a notice from my daughter's school - there was a student with measles at school for half a day a couple of weeks ago. Oh yay.

My daughter is fully vaccinated and isn't a close contact. But even so.

Measles is in the community in Wellington.

Decided that rather than put in a whole bunch of effort finding out if I ever had a measles vaccine, I’d just get it done. Easy peasy at the pharmacy, and fully funded too! If you have any doubts about your immunity at all, this is a great time to get yourself sorted.

Sir Keir Starmer has been specifically named in a UN report for complicity in Israel's genocide.

The report states that the UK government played "a key role in military collaboration with Israel... a collective crime... with detailed knowledge and cooperation in the destruction of Gaza." 🧵

We have just rejected our first submission where the use of Gen-AI to rewrite the article was acknowledged.
Given the way that they commandeer public water resources and contribute to climate collapse, we do not think that there is an ethical way to use such tools.

Was reviewing footage from coverage of the protests today by our State broadcaster...

Their (very brief) coverage ended with a whining Simeon Brown, and Stanford (apparently a Minister of Education) fueling outright, emotive BS, YET AGAIN.

It's basically openly laundering RW propaganda...
