Recent excavations at Pompeii’s thermopolium—snack bar—have uncovered a first-floor apartment, a bathroom, and now, an Egyptian vase thought to have been repurposed as a food container. Next up for researchers: find out what was inside!

Scientists Recreate Rare Pigment Behind Octopus 'Superpowers'
Octopuses and other cephalopods are masters of camouflage, thanks largely to color-changing skin that can help them seemingly vanish into the background.

Watson apparently “over-learned that his bad manners were tolerated because of the greatness of the discovery he had made.”

I believe in a law of conservation of skepticism. People who are totally cynical about some things have a childlike naivete about most other things.
The irony of conspiracy theorists is, of course, that they are the most easily manipulated people on the planet. For, having no standards of evidence whatsoever, they can be led by the nose to believe anything – so long as it isn't true.

And just one of the most obvious reasons this shit is not just academic anymore, but really matters...
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.
This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.

I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

So here it malfunctions in giving the wrong response, but worse, it knows not what it says - knows not the silliness of its malfunction even if told - because it *knows* nothing, because knowing is the ability to bring some concept to conscious attention, and it is not conscious.

In truth AI doesn't even 'make mistakes' as it has no concept of truth, because it has no concepts, because concepts are conscious, and AI is not.
What it does, is function, and in respect to the function of doing whatever it is we want it to, when it fails, it malfunctions.

No human being that makes the mistakes LLMs make would be be described with the unqualified term 'intelligent'. They might be described as showing intelligence in some areas, though for the areas LLMs excel in, it's better described as 'good (even wonderful) at some tasks', but not intelligent.
Despite the flood of evidence demonstrating the misnomer, we continue to call it 'AI' when it's anything but. Maybe AI is possible, but I'm personally sure it won't be until artificial consciousness is realised first, and to think it's realised in LLMs is either wrong, or an absurd use of the word.
You can’t really blame arXiv for the decision to stop publishing computer science stuff (given the flood of slop) but this is also a textbook example of a global public good being gratuitously degraded www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Preprint site arXiv is banning computer-science reviews: here’s why
The repository is taking steps to tackle a surge in low quality, AI-generated content.
