I'm so confused when people say they don't like Silent Hill f combat, we must've played different games
October 3, 2025 at 2:21 PM
Finished my first run of Silent Hill f, loved it. Idk how anyone could

1. Not want to start replays immediately given the ending

2. Not be mind blown by the story, especially everything at and after the residence

I've only played 2R and f, both great but I liked this one more it was such a ride.

I really want to complete a commercial game project, in many years of hobby game dev I haven't done it.

Going to put my framework to the side and use Unreal Engine since I'm familiar with the basics. I have an idea for a first person horror project I think will be fun and is achievable.

When fishing in Nier I like to see how far I can cast the bot, not sure if there's a limit but when you get him really far it's hard to see

As a kid my favorite games were turn based JRPGs, and I still love them, but now in my late 30s my favorites are faster paced action games.

It's hard for me to replay a JRPG now even if it's amazing, but DMC, Gears, Souls, metroidvanias, I love these kind of games and can play them over and over.

Gonna try replaying Nier Automata, I really liked the game the first time but I did all the paths for the true ending and feel like I didn't really get it?

Maybe revisiting it will help

Reading on patents, to be clear not defending Nintendo just sharing what I learned.

Under patent law's "all elements rule" a game needs all elements from a claim to infringe. Nintendo's new patent is ~41 pages, and is one claim.

Interesting, but generic mechanics being patented is still worrying.

I really don't know when I'll play Silksong, looks awesomeand it's exciting but I'll probably even play Silent Hill f before I get to Silksong

It's just not that high on my priority list

9/9/1995.

Today marks three decades since America welcomed the console that redefined gaming.

30 years ago today, Sony released the original #Playstation in the USA, which means that on this date in 1995 American gamers were first introduced to what is quite possibly the greatest boot audio to ever grace an electronic device. Sound on for this one, everyone! #PS1

It's the 30th anniversary of the NA release of my favorite retro console, the PS1!

I was just playing THPS on mine this morning 😊

I added more primitives! It's no longer just cubes!

I can't begin to express the amount of refactoring you do creating your first game engine.

Each time you set out to do a simple thing turns out you need an update across the entire rendering pipeline.

I'm loving it though, I've learned an insane amount about how games really work, it's super cool.

Yeah yeah there's Silksong but I'm still playing Corn Kidz 64 and this game is really good

Adding more primitives, today was spheres!

Turns out there's a billion different ways to make a sphere, these are cube spheres which are great for a retro aesthetic. They're probably the only type of sphere primitive I'll need in the framework.

It's hard to find people making hobby or indie game engines and frameworks on here, if you're making a 3D game framework, or even a tool, or just making a game using a low level framework or library I'd love to see what you're working on!

Especially if it's something retro style!

Cleaning up my rendering code, I have an issue where it's darker after adding a geometry shader and putting lighting in vertex shader (gouraud shading)

Been fighting it all week, maybe a side effect of geometry shader pass through?

Might just crank ambient and move on before I spend too long on it

Shaders are hard.

You fix something. You think let me do a quick refactor, clean this up. You move one thing, everything breaks.

This bug was hard.

With affine texture mapping (like PS1) you want minor distortion, but I was getting massive stretching in my framework.

I knew it was OpenGL culling offscreen vertices thanks to James Hawk's blog post below, and you can fix it with... 1/2

Have you ever played Little Ninja Brothers? You should, especially with a friend! It's the co-op action RPG sequel to Chinese Hero / Kung Fu Heroes but better in every way.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this one once I gave it a chance.
