No, it's not a repeat from yesterday's #Crustmas crustacean! This is the Cryptic Kelp Crab (Pugettia richii), distinguished from Northern Kelp Crabs by its smaller size, spikier carapace, & its ✨fabulous✨ fashion sense, decorating its carapace, usually just by the rostrum, with little bits of algae.

Another #crustmas miracle: I remembered a painting I did right before I started my PhD. Have a really colorful ghost crab.
My postdoc is (amazingly!) a 9-5, so I'm hoping to get back into painting again.

As part of the exotic pet trade I understand collecting in the wild is part of the trade. But people in the hobby lack so much self-awareness.
The same people who lament how some stag beetles species are rare now are the ones who poach them. Like that’s your fault.

Hi! I'm a senior undergrad entomology major at Cornell in the Hoy lab working with @jaystafstrom.bsky.social on the downward-facing eyes of ogre-faced spiders! Interested in sensory biology & behavior - especially with arthropod study systems (spiders haha). Looking forward to meeting new people :)
