I genuinely have no idea how to convey this to the American people, but I think the biggest impediment to any kind of immigration reform is that people are convinced that "legal" and "illegal" are immutable, intrinsic categories instead of a rapidly-shifting arbitrary constellation of regulations.

People are getting really fooled by things in the Epstein files. This is NOT a "Declassified FBI memo". It is a story told to the FBI by a CHS ("confidential human source"), who could be anyone from a petty criminal to a whistleblower to a propagandist trying to deceive (as here). Be smarter. 1/

When I lecture to students about how the apparently thriving economy of the 1920s was really a house of cards just waiting to be knocked down, one of the points I stress is how much a small number of the very rich were essentially propping up consumer spending in unsustainable ways
The top 10% now account for nearly half of all consumer spending.
