Police do not have a legal responsibility to protect the public. This was established in Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales (2005). Given this, and the tremendous harm they do every day, what possible argument could one give for not abolishing the institution of policing entirely?

It's almost like colleges and universities made fools of themselves and permanently threw away any trust they may have had for absolutely no reason, and are paying more money because they are getting sued for violating basic constitutional rights. Tragic.

Same reason why the (westernized) Christian God/religion should be viewed as an authoritarian hand of white supremacy. It's no coincidence missionaries subdued Black and Brown people with scriptures like "turn the other cheek" and "slaves obey your masters" before they were subjugated.
Reminds me of the Trevor Noah podcast episode that said we prep children for authoritarianism when we teach them to pass issues to higher powers.
"If a kid hits you, tell the teacher." "If your boss harasses you, tell HR." "If the police brutalize you, film it and tell...different police." Your own body is someone else's to protect and defend. Because if you defend YOURSELF, you're "just as bad as your abuser."
