arts festival president saying "half our grants go back to city in police costs" is beyond infuriating. the police run a protection racket. they are a literal mob, dude
246: folk fest president. Advocating for increased funding for arts. Arts is a necessity. Festivals under threat. Many have folded. We bring in millions of dollars to economy. We bring joy in world of despair. Half of our grants just go back to city in police costs.

Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

god i didnt even think about this but imagine a world where the steam machine takes off because it's (hopefully!) reasonably priced and convenient... and a ton of live service games are incompatible because so few of them want to support steamOS/linux due to kernel anti-cheat lol

So does this mean content discussing authoritarianism is not allowed on Bluesky, and accounts can be banned for that?

Because that’s what it sounds like.

Tim Sweeney getting this upset over a review grilling a game for using AI tools is proof that more and more reviews should be taking the same approach whenever AI pops up.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has defended AI following Eurogamer's 2/5 Arc Raiders review, which criticised the game's use use of AI voice generation. "AI dialog generation + human personality and tuning could totally transform gaming," Sweeney said.

Have you tried the new Procreate brushes? I was trying to get a creamy, painterly look, but it all blended together into a muddy mess 😅 I still love the painterly style, so I figured out some tricks to make it work!

I made a video about it ~ find it here: www.patreon.com/posts/tutori...

Just want to note also how deeply uncritical so many physicians were on Twitter about ‘AI’. I saw a resident happily saying he plans on using ‘AI to read and write journal articles to free up time for him.’
Others saw no privacy issues.
Just…a mess.
a few months ago I said "having generative AI handle absolutely anything with regards to healthcare is a nightmare and should be banned" and a bunch of people made fun of me and called me stupid. anyways,

also, there are plenty of text to speech tools that just record and don't analyze and they've existed for nearly my entire life. we've got to stop allowing people to conflate direct, non-generative tools with genAI when they have a financial incentive to do so

we should not be letting any company get away with blaming AI for their failures. I'm not even sure how we got to this point. people are like "it's just a tool" okay so is a forklift and we still hold somebody responsible when it goes wrong and hurts someone. this is YOUR AI!

NEW: What could we have instead of Australia's teen social media ban?

A lot of the debate on the ban has framed it as ban vs nothing. But there's plenty of options for improving online safety for young people.

Please understand that Americans who have a serious chronic illness essentially have no where to run to.

(The immigration rules of countries with the kind of health care system it takes to keep me alive deny me admission because I'm seriously chronically ill, and, therefore, a 'drain on resources')
I am not done fighting.

I do need to get a good night's sleep. But please know that I am not done fighting for healthcare. I understand that many of you — many of US — die without medical care.

it’s cute that they think we’ll forget

if they work together to keep everyone’s hands off it who is up for re-election anytime soon that just reinforces that this was a strategy more of them agreed on than the ones who vote yes. nuke them all from orbit
It doesn't actually matter if Chuck Schumer votes for this or not.

If he can't keep his caucus unified to protect healthcare for over 10 million Americans, he should resign as leader.

The original Dem demands were:
1) Permanent ACA subsidies
2) Medicaid funding restored
3) No more blank checks for the regime (rescission)

They dropped Medicaid immediately. Went silent on rescission. Cut back to 1 year of subsidies on Friday. And surrendered today.

If your senators voted "No" then you should call them and immediately pressure them to depose of Schumer
Schumer can be removed from his Dem leadership role this week - 23 Dems (and/or independents) just have to vote to depose him

And they should, given this is his fault.
This is a lovely sentiment but Schumer isn't up for re-election until 2028 and he knows this. At which point he will be 77/78. There's no mechanism to recall a sitting senator AFAIK.
