Mayor Bowser has been doing sweeps of encampments for years and calling it "housing first". It's very common for unhoused folks to get swept away and lose contact with informal support networks, social workers, housing case managers, etc all because white liberals dont like seeing the poor. 1/2

This has been fucking with me cuz a couple years ago I used to do mutual aid at DC encampments. And those vids we saw last night of those folks driving the cops off 14th Street? That's not gonna happen tonight. DC NIMBYs don't give a shit about unhoused neighbors. They'll be largely on their own.

Consider asking a friend or case manager to store important documents. Carry the number of an emergency contact. Keep a list of medications with you at all times. Keep your phone fully charged if you have one. Shelter hotline: 202-399-7093. Washington legal clinic for the homeless tips for interacting with police. 1. Stay calm. Say, "I am exercising my right to be silent. I do not consent to a search of my body or property." 2. Move belongings. If your belongings are on federal land or blocking the sidewalk, passage way, or business, offer to move to another plane or to pack up the tent. 3. Ask if you are free to leave. If told yes, then leave. If told no, try to remember everything you can about the arresting officer (uniform, badge number, name) and any witnesses. Immediately state, "I want to speak to a lawyer." 4. Call us. Call us when you are safe. 202-328-5500.
