Olive grove by olive grove, sheep pasture by sheep pasture, village by village — over the past two years, Israeli settlers, often with Israeli military support, have escalated their unrelenting campaign to seize land and erase its Palestinian presence. Paywall free: nytimes.com/interactive/...

nobody who works for waymo will see the kingdom of heaven. anyone who supports these companies at the policy level gonna enjoy the other place
At least five FUBARed Waymo robots:

Market & Guerrero, SF

One is a problem, two a mistake, five a major ops screw up. Waymo has never fixed their cascading failure problem. Maybe they don't know how.

Fundamentally unfit for service at scale until they do, IMO.

Really enjoyed this fantastic piece by @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social and @cnygren.bsky.social

Here are few favorite pull quotes of mine + one little quibble at the end:
"We envision a resistance that is...a repudiation of the efficiencies that automated algorithmic education falsely promises: a resistance comprising the collective force of small acts of friction."

What you do for work is at best, useless, and at worst, going to destroy humanity. You want to think you’re Marie Curie, experimenting with something dangerous that can change lives. You’re more like the girls of Atomic City, except you know what you’re working with. You know you’re building a bomb.

ppl are hostile b/c they don't like genAI, they don't like genAI b/c as presently constructed it's obscenely wasteful, useless, and fundamentally malignant tech that is eroding what was already a shaky social compact
people don't appreciate losing work b/c of this! if your job is making it, well…

the term "AI" has been covered in sewage and offal by what's happened over the last three years, when they brag on their "AI-driven" tech thing of course people hate on it
nobody has to be fair to anyone who uses this rancid hype to promote themselves. gtfooh

I don't know how many times this needs to be said, but apparently a lot: If you are not in a position to verify the accuracy of some synthetic text, the synthetic text is not useful/has a high potential to be misleading.

This is one of those cases.
The rationale I was given for AI Summaries *alongside* ordinary abstracts:

* The AI-generated summaries are intended to be more accessible to non-experts.

COME on
1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

Have you tried Apple's "Clean Up" ai function in Photos? It's advertised as being able to remove blemishes, distracting details, entire objects. But if you use it in any photo that contains nudity it switches to a censored pixelation mode. One step closer to my tweeted predictions.

this is a dysfunctional party that has no idea what it's doing or the likely consequences of its actions
It has been nearly 30 years since Congress passed Section 230 and gave platforms immunity from lawsuits.

Our children deserve a safer internet and tech companies need to be held accountable for what happens on their platforms.
