Short version: if you teach in spring, you will want to use this! It's the future of higher education. A short thread: 1/x Today, we lecture, give exams, see student gets 7/10, move on. Educ lit clear that individual tutoring, tracked to level of each student, much more effective - but costly. In Algebra 1 type courses, orgs like @khanacademy have great million $ tools. What about *your* course? 2/x

a fine theorem @bsky.social posts: What we want from AI at a university is three things: 1) individual tracking and guidance at each student's level, 2) content that follows what *you* want to teach and how you teach it, 3) structured in a way that improves student learning and also your own teaching. 3/x [larger] GPT/Claude can do #1. But they don't do a good job at 2 b/c they don't know what you want to teach, or what's "important", and they don't do a good job at 3 because LLMs make it very easy to let the AI do assignments. Good evidence now that raw LLM use may *harm* learning. 4/x I made a demo AI in early 2023 trying to solve this issue. So much demand we spun out a company & hired pros to clean up the UX and backend. This fall, our AI was used in a closed beta worldwide: Toronto, UCLA, Princeton, Chicago, MIT...all the way to Italy & Australia. 5/x

@joelcardwell.bsky.social made a transphobic post about "Elonia" (presumably to irritate Elon Musk) I replied: making a "joke" at the expense of trans people to own the rancid tech tycoon who's irritated by it is still bigoted, still hurts vulnerable people, and reflects badly on you. consider deleting this and apologizing to the trans community. spreading this stuf is corrosive @joelcardwell.bsky.social has blocked me. which seems like something a brittle manchild who's also a genuine bigot would do. but who can say

Not gonna be active on Github reviewing typescript PRs tonight. I’m meeting a girl (a real one) in half an hour (wouldn’t expect a lot of you to understand anyway) so please don’t DM me asking me where I am (im with the girl, ok) you’ll most likely get aired because ill be with the girl (again I don’t expect you to understand) shes actually really interested in me and its not a situation i can pass up for some meaningless Github JavaScript degenerates (because ill be meeting a girl, not that you really are going to understand) this is my life now. Meeting women and not wasting my precious time online, I have to move on from such simple things and branch out (you wouldnt understand)

huh, bash builtin true is erroring as well here - bash might be picking the error status up from when the redirect tries & fails to open the file? it even does it when shell builtin true doesn't print anything
