I would *like* to have aesthetically pleasing football, but I recognise the need to win consistently, and the way sides won consistently in the last decade isn't how they are now, so accepting the shift seems somewhat necessary for now. If it means winning and plenty of goals, I won't mind too much.

bsky.app/profile/hal.... I totally agree with Hal here. I also want to watch more free-flowing, more aesthetically pleasing football. But the truth is there is less and less of it in the Prem on the whole *and* the Prem has gotten significantly more competitive/harder in the last decade
The brutal fact is, like it or not, we cannot demand it because the Premier League is so competitive. Unless we don't care about winning. There *has* to be some compromise.

Agree quality was low yesterday. Both sides intent on disrupting the other, and it worked.
OK, so this does cast that match in a better light. Brentford at home are a real tough nut to crack.

Only City have beaten them, and that was by a single goal and 0.85 xG - less than we had today.

They've claimed some big scalps there this season.

Their home record: 7 Wins, 3 Draws, 1 Loss.

If this is real it is seismic. 😱😱😱

Ash has more appearances than any other Spurs player and has been one of our most consistent players, through our good but also bad seasons. Clearly not a starter long term but did not expect this yet.

Hindsight is always wonderful. Thanks for this. I feel today with a fresh mind that we do need to give our heads a wobble. We’ve got some designs on ourselves. Truth is we aren’t that good and we haven’t been for a while. We need better players. This dream of sexy football and losing happened weekly

Yeah, I'm not into excess negativity or calling for sackings. Ironically, as poor as it looks, the tactical ideas against Palace and Brentford made sense. That's a good way to thwart them. Better sides than us lose by failing to respect what sides like Brentford love to do against attacking sides.

Thank you for this. It’s what I’m going to hold on to from last night. Totally fed up with the utter negativity of the Spurs commentary. Even worse here than the other place.

Might get flamed for this but the less I think about Spurs’ middling performances and the more I accept context/results, four points from two games is ok.

- no Xavi/Bergvall/Romero
- Brentford’s good home record
- two clean sheets
- low squad confidence
- similar league positions to us

Also, context:

As ugly as they were, the away games against Palace and Brentford are two performances that make sense to me this season.

What I can't quite understand is why we are so poor at home. Is it simply lack of time to train the "attacking layer"?

We need someone in the midfield, preferably a 6, that has some idea of how to pass the ball forward. This works no matter the system or future manager.

This is key. For players like Bergvall, Gray, Xavi, Tel, and Odobert we have to remember that mistakes will happen as they develop. The problem is, they are 4 of our best starting XI right now. We need to surround them with better, more consistent players. Deki/Solanke will help. But we need more.

TLDR: please spend money on quality that either helps Frank or the next guy and isn’t dependent on one philosophy to be good PL players.

Heading to Ghent today! Then Antwerp later on, Brussels tomorrow and Brugges on Sunday. It’s too early imo to be up but want to make the most of the day. Waffles for breakfast are a must this morning.

I hope the decisiveness with which we’ve acted in selling Bren so soon into the window is a sign that things may be changing on the transfer front without Levy. You just know we’d have haggled before. But if we’re that decisive on selling players before value drops + bringing quality in, that’s good

The Premier League is changing
Across Pep’s tenure at City his teams have averaged just 2.66 matches per season where our share of possession has been <= 50%.

24 matches in 9 seasons. Last season there were 3 matches in 57 played.

As we enter the New Year this term, City have averaged <= 50% possession in 7 of our 27 matches.

Hey, given how fraught dealings with Palace have been in the past, it is at least encouraging we got a deal done early with no fuss. I wonder if Levy had been around, a sale would not have gone anywhere near as smoothly. He'd have probably haggled them for another £5m to the end of the window.

The the problem lies deeper and it has for a while the recruitment has been awful. Knowing Sonny would go we haven’t nailed down a proper replacement early. We have plenty of options there but no one who is premier league ready cos we won’t spend the big money. It’s not urgent now MF and LWB are

Damn. I didn’t see much of the match but idk man I’ll take the best away form in the league, especially when we are already missing 3 of our biggest goal contributors from last season (Maddison, Deki, Solanke) and have done for months, and were also missing Xavi, Bergvall and Udogie in this one.
