Would love to see this happen in another Canadian city, and I hope if it's successful it starts a wave of similar legislation.
Vancouver city councillor @lucymaloney.bsky.social has introduced a new Council motion that would get rid of right turns on red lights in the city. Via @dailyhivevancouver.bsky.social

Unquestionably the smart, evidence-based move for EVERYONE’s safety, but especially for people walking & on bikes.
Ban right turns on red at intersections, proposes Vancouver city councillor | Urbanized
OneCity councillor Lucy Maloney is pushing for a ban on right turns during the red-light traffic signal at intersections across Vancouver.

So exciting! I've been working on FWLRT for over a year now and can't wait to finally ride it!
Per this slide deck for Metrolinx's November 27 board meeting shared via the @urbantoronto.bsky.social forums, Line 6 is planned to open on December 7. While cited in prior media reports, it's the first time coming from Metrolinx directly. #TTC #TOpoli #ONpoli assets.metrolinx.com/image/upload...

An excellent thread that I hope Hamilton and Metrolinx consider for the Hamilton B-Line in sections where the RoW is extremely narrow!
Transit Signal Priority is an umbrella term for multiple strategies that reduce delays for transit vehicles at signalized intersections, potentially down to zero.

Here, I'm comparing the trade-offs between a "French-style" and an "in-phase" TSP strategy, more common in North America.

If Hamilton ends up choosing BRT over rail transit for the eventual A-line I hope it's at least something like this.
A City Like Victoria should really be looking at building a higher order transit system with tech like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnmV...

It's unfortunate when a great design gets let down by a single aspect. Waiting here to cross the road where the cycletrack continues, it's wonderful that there is a waiting area but it doesn't feel great without any curb protection as cars whiz past.
October 19, 2025 at 1:13 PM
There's always pushback on this (rightfully) pointing out that cars are the bigger hazard. Both can be true. 15mph is a reasonable speed limit for vehicles in bike lanes and shared paths. Keep pushing for 30-40kph limits on the road for all vehicles inside urban areas, and for less car lanes.

one of the craziest things to me is we learned basically immediately that this was terrible from a public safety perspective, especially for child/elderly pedestrians

Some politicians will say out loud that road deaths are the cost of doing business. MPP Ric Breese at the Bill 212 committee meeting said that we would need to slow cars to 5km/h to avoid all deaths, and of course we can't do that, so "there occasionally will be injuries".
Violent crime is more rare, shocking, headline-grabbing. We treat it as an intolerable aberration from the norm. And we should! But that suggests that road deaths and injuries are the norm and are therefore tolerable. No politician will say that out loud, but watch what they prioritize.

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

Canada Post “lost” 1 billion dollars last year?

How about, “it cost Canadians 1 billion dollars to have a national postal service” which works out to costing about $25 a year per person (population of Canada in 2024 = 40 million). Seems like a pretty reasonable cost to me.
"Canada Post is on track to lose money" Hum. Duh. It cost less than a toonie to send a letter across Canada.

"Canada Post is a service and not a business" was common knowledge until late stage capitalism brain rotted most people into think if it ain't making money for shareholders, it's failing.

This is why a network of safe, protected bike lanes is important. It's not for the seasoned "avid" cyclist. It's for the children, the elderly, and anyone who doesn't want to risk their life just to bike somewhere.
“Lanrick why have you been fighting so hard to create safe infrastructure for people especially kids in #TorontoDanforth?”

This is was what it looks like @ Borden St & College Street @ about 8.45am

Protected cycling infrastructure that prioritizes vulnerable road users.

What a concept. #BikeTO
