“We’re not climate deniers” is something that policy makers axing the 0.08% of their $2.8B budget allocated to emission reductions, will need to continue saying.

City staff are now outlining the "2027 pressures" and that they'll "have to reset" the forecast to reflect growing pressures.

The 2027 budget is going to be a disaster, with no reserves remaining. #yhmcc

Council is now onto Spadafora/Francis proposal to defer the 2026 Climate Change Reserve investment to 2027. Both say they do not deny climate change - make arguments why they are not "defunding climate action".

Friendly reminder - they tried to defund the reserve last year too. #HamOnt

Fearing that educated judges might rule on climate cases, Republican Attorneys General successfully bullied the The Federal Judicial Center (the education & research arm of the federal court system) into removing a chapter summarizing climate science from their scientific judicial reference manual.

In 2014, New York City lowered its citywide default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. In the year that followed:

- Traffic fatalities fell by more than 22 percent

- Pedestrian fatalities fell by more than 25 percent

transalt.org/reports-list...
Also, most car crashes occur at intersections, and not because a car was exceeding the speed.

My bet is that even if you made it so no one could speed anywhere, it would only marginally lower traffic fatalities.

2) Email the City Clerk to have your letter included for the February 6 meeting. Deadline is Wednesday at noon. Say it clearly, we need more bike lanes, more bike racks, and faster delivery. Not pauses.

Here is what you can do right now.

1. Email your councillor. Tell them safe cycling infrastructure matters to you. Protected bike lanes and bike parking are basic transportation, not extras.

Pausing cycling infrastructure is not neutral. It means fewer protected bike lanes, fewer safe connections, and fewer bike racks. It means slower progress and more risk for people who bike, walk, or roll.

We also need a Team Canada approach to drafting trade agreements. The model is not suited for the times, does not foster more balanced international trade, and often throws Canadian workers under the bus.
To unlock the full potential of our new trade agreements, we need a Team Canada approach.

FYI to any #HamOnt City Hall watchers - yesterday's Climate Change Advisory Committee meeting was not able to go forward due to a tech issue. Our ED Ian who was chairing the meeting made the decision at 6:15pm (after much troubleshooting by staff) to not move forward with the meeting.
