Rightly lots of debates about growth this weekend - rightly because it was low productivity growth that saw wages entirely flatline during the 2010s.

The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

We need to talk about the UK's trade and growth. I've just published a new piece with @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social on what's happened to UK trade since the pandemic and Brexit, and what it means for growth. The picture isn't pretty.

A thread (with many charts):

A perfect storm: Britain's trade malaise, weak growth and a new geopolitical moment
The UK is facing its most severe trade challenge in decades – and at the worst possible time.

Hi All, just released this free post outlining the Black Sea Ceasefire and how the Trump and Putin governments have basically tried to box Ukraine (and Europe) in. It was (another) betrayal of Ukraine where the US pretended to be friendly, but knifed it in the back.

(2/3) The UK government is doing its best to live up to this commitment, but the US is effectively siding with Russia in undermining it. Instead of seeing its sovereignty preserved, Ukraine is being pressured to accept a lopsided peace agreement without real guarantees.

Worth stating simply what’s happening. An American government is launching a full-scope political & economic assault on an ally repelling an ongoing invasion to compel them to terminate martial law, topple their president, hand over minerals to America & accept a ceasefire w/out security guarantees.

This morning at Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HQ in DC as mandatory return to office began, this video played on loop for ~5 mins on screens throughout the building, per agency source.

Building staff couldn’t figure out how to turn it off so sent people to every floor to unplug TVs.

No, not embarrassing. “Embarrassing” is Trump’s servility to Putin. But this is enraging - trying to extort valuable resources from the country he is happy to betray. And it’s a warning to Europe: Trump’s US can no longer be regarded as a reliable ally, as I wrote: www.cer.eu/insights/tru...

To the right-wing pundits crowing over Vance's speech: if you are really "less worried" about a dictator-state that's invaded its neighbour, killed tens of thousands of people, reduced cities to rubble & engaged in mass rape and child abduction, than you are about "wokery", then you are truly lost.
