2025 update because I'm not seeking to hire anyone or sponsor any new students right now. Possible exceptions for people who are *really* allied with my funded work (e.g., on mpox vax, vax misinfo) and/or have access to external funding (e.g., fellowship, home nation). Lab is at capacity for now.
Prospective students: Here's what you need to know if you think you might want to work with me (a thread):

1. I'm not looking to recruit new students at the moment. (There could be some exceptions, especially for research-oriented Master's students in my school or interdisciplinary studies.)
This is an incredible story
Feels like a good morning to tell Bluesky the story about when I overdosed on my underwear, so let’s do this! 🧵

Important context: “Considering that titers wane in vaccinated people and that mpox cases among vaccinated individuals are generally less severe, immunity to mpox likely extends beyond antibodies”
#Mpox antibodies wane 2 years after infection or vaccination, study finds

Participants with prior infection were more likely than vaccine recipients to retain some detectable antibodies.

Didn’t have this on our bingo card. Russia has announced sanctions against 28 Canadians it claims promote “neo-Nazism,” targeting people it links to anti-Russian activism, including our lab’s researchers @gruzd.ca and @philipmai.com. anyways i think it's kind of wild how quickly we went from "be careful, that shark in the flooded city is from a different hurricane" to "nearly every piece of media about this world event is fake and also we took the fake media and made it nude also we added more explosions"

Canada (among others) take note:
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

Obviously, this can not replace a trained specialist. I'm hoping someone, though, can take (or has already taken) a stab at quantifying how in/accurate major LLMs are with DNA interpretation, much as has started to be done on other topic areas.
January 5, 2026 at 11:52 PM
And, while I'm not a geneticist or LLM expert, I assume these embedded assumptions are also easily lost by a content machine that strings together likely sequences of words.
January 5, 2026 at 11:50 PM
Yeah. I recognize this is a huge red flag for unmet needs of patients (I observed this in a rare genetic disease community, so patients on the margins for whom personalized info/interpretation may actually be needed) and also YIKES is the LLM actually better than nothing? I honestly don’t know.

Sharing this not because it's breaking news, but b/c it was kinda buried under holidays and I am increasingly aware US colleagues don't know that the Canadian Minister of Health said on record in Dec that the US is no longer a reliable source of health info: www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Health Minister Marjorie Michel says she worries about how recent actions by U.S. public health agencies, like removing a universal hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for American infants, could harm ...

Anyone publishing yet about accuracy of chatGPT or other publicly available LLMs in helping patients interpret their DNA? Seeing more and more reports of people feeding LLMs their sequencing from 23 and me or other source and acting on the interpretation, and...I have concerns.

New year, still feeling that Xennial horror that "AI" has come to mean GIGO LLMs and not robots with the ability to feel love.

Sadly, the propaganda related to recent Maduro abduction by USA serves as a cautionary tale about taking photos/video at face value. Combo of old (out of context real images) & new (fictitiously generated w “AI”) tactics at play.
THREAD: Viral misinformation on US capture of Nicolas Maduro - 4 January

This video, shared by Alex Jones and others, falsely claims to show millions of Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro's capture.

In fact, it shows anti-Maduro protests in July 2024 over a highly disputed election.

In a study following 23 million people age 18-59 (pretty young) for 4 years…despite the fact that the ones who got the COVID vaccine were overall older and sicker at baseline, they not only had 74% lower risk of dying from COVID than the unvaccinated but 25% lower risk of dying from any other cause!

If you or someone you know have been a victim of the sexualized deepfakes created by Grok and would like to discuss your civil legal options, DM me or reach out on Signal at riot.95. I can connect you with excellent free legal counsel.
Unless I'm missing something, and I'm pretty sure I'm not, Twitter's AI is cranking out CSAM deepfakes, Elon Musk is making jokes about it, and nobody is doing anything to stop it or hold anyone at Twitter accountable for its creation and distribution.

Is that right?

Based on data from 27 reports, basic income recipients are more likely to find long-term employment, and not a single pilot has resulted in reduced work. Recipients also experience less stress, because of course they do.

Fellow PIs, what non-technical lab practices or procedures do you have policies about? Trying to assess what is not covered by my school or university level policies but not so technical that it's project/method specific. Things like records/data mgt, authorship guidelines, outside work/collab, etc.

I have never understood the (over)confidence some profs put in the reliability & validity of their exams. Many exams are not particularly well crafted, few are ever validated scientifically, some don’t even seem to align well w overall course learning objectives.
I had a class on Joseph Conrad and on the first day the professor said that the only grade for the class would be the final, and that it would be passage identification. I never showed up to class again, read nine of the ten books the day before the final and aced the test.
I skipped out on a Music Theory class and showed up for the final, and passed it! Of course, that was just one grade for the semester, sooo.... 😆

I feel like if I can pass your final without showing up, I deserve the credit though. Cause isn't the point to prove I know the material? 😆
