At least we don’t live in a world of staggering class disparity in which a tech magnate attempts to quash left-wing sentiment using sexualized artificial intelligence!

Anytime some yahoo says, “all serious historians agree…” I want to say:
1. What is a “serious” historian?
2. Have you ever actually been in a room with more than one historian? We can’t even agree with how long the 19th century was.

In an essay in the JHI Blog’s forum on political economy, Nate Holdren elaborates three levels of analytical abstraction at which intellectual historians invoke the term "political economy," turning our attention to the way that capitalism structurally conditions ignorance of the social totality.
Three Meanings of Political Economy: Reflections on Intellectual History, Marxism, and Capitalism’s Unthought

"Quiet quitting" by professors when it comes to AI and student writing is a serious risk.

The temptation to give up (in effect) instead of devoting *substantial* resources (of time, energy, and emotional investment) to what can seem like an unwinnable fight is real.

But it *is* the good fight.
Given the rates of faculty burnout and interest in quittng that various surveys were reporting even before the AI bullshit showed up I gotta figure a major faculty reaction to AI stuff has to be just going 'whatever, fuck it, do what you want' - basically quiet quitting. I think rn administrators
Academics literally cannot make Gen AI go away. As in it is not possible to make it happen on a political, legal, and technical level. We do not and will not command the massive violence necessary to make chatGPT or Claude disappear. Responsible pedagogy grapples with the fact!
