If your game has voice acting, then working with the voice actors is half of your writing process. It's not complete until you've heard it interpreted and reimagined by a voice actor. And they always reimagine it in ways that elevate the writing, in ways you never would have imagined yourself.

A friend who is a terrific stage actor asked me about the challenges of voicework and I replied "You not only have to imagine the environment and circumstances, you have to imagine your scene partner." That extra level of contextual integrity separates real story immersion from line delivery.

I'd expand this to all authors. In a broader field that is often so isolated and without direct conversation between writer and reader, it is an extraordinary gift to reach out and tell someone how their work impacted you.
On behalf of all self-published authors, I authorize you to reach out & tell us if you really enjoyed something we wrote.

We’re all dog-paddling in a sea of self-doubt & impostor syndrome & those little messages mean a lot.

Unless stated otherwise, our DMs/inboxes are always open for kind words 💞

anyway for my fellow devs I recommend filling out the state of the industry survey, it's imperfect but about as good as we get in trying to get a yearly pulse of the industry

here's a sentence from my answer about layoffs:

The C-Suite and boardroom members beholden to capital and investors have created a sinking ship because they've pulled up all the planks, thrown everything overboard, replaced it with nothing, and expect the ghost ship to keep sailing smoothly.

friendos, this was really fun to moderate!

@kjartankennedy.com and @gregwrogers.bsky.social let me prod at all kinds of dark, scary corners of the game development process and tease out some super interesting tidbits (including a Very Fun Fact about Joni's "haunted" house).

Check it out!
On Saturday Nov. 1, we hosted a Directors' Commentary screening of The Haunting of Joni Evers in the @causewaystudios.com Discord server. We wanted it as a historical artifact and to share widely with players and other devs.

We hope you enjoy it!

I truly can't stress this enough: No one's art is good enough to justify them being miserable to work with. Almost everyone I've worked with has been wonderful, but the handful of folks that weren't brought the whole team down by being egotistical, sexist, condescending, etc.
