Intercepting this thread halfway through to recommend reading about a US civil war casualty, a federal soldier, injured by a confederate (?) canon ball, during active service….during world war 2.
Soon enough, World War II comes along, and now there's suddenly an entirely new problem to deal with, and that is GERMAN U-BOATS.
There's... a lot of coastline on the U.S. A LOT. And a lot of places a boat or submarine could land and unload German spies. I think it happened once!

I'm obviously just joking. It is necessary for the police to have military grade weaponry because you never know what dangerous citizens may be armed with sandwiches.
