R.I.P. Peter Temin - besides his well known work in economic history he has also contributed to pharmaceutical market design “Nationally, if we keep the current structure, in 50 years only hedge fund managers will be able to afford prescription drugs.”

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Peter Temin. His 2007 paper - Instututions and Inequality in 20th Century America - with Frank Levy had a massive influence on me. Easy to forget how contentious these ideas were at the time

I was fortunate to know and write with Peter Temin, an eminent economic historian who taught at MIT for several decades. I taught his work in both European and American economic history, and was fortunate to work with him on his most recent projects on inequality. May his memory be a blessing.
My last living musical hero is still my hero but unfortunately no longer living. RIP to the great, great Mr. Tom Lehrer.
Thanks to everyone who attended our annual workshop! Special thanks to @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social for hosting, and to all our speakers for 2 excellent days of research and conversations. Economic history is thriving!

#OnThisDay 1991: The monopoly on listings magazines had ended with the deregulation of TV listings. So for example Radio Times can now list ITV/Ch4 programmes and TV Times with the BBC's.

Pictured are the covers from the first full week of such listings.

Fingers crossed. Somehow Hollywood in recent decades has managed to make the Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk or Superman repeatedly into dull/bloated/overlong films. I just wish the artistic and commercial virtues of 80-100 minute popcorn cinema were something taught more often in film school.

Looks like we might have our first entertaining Superman film since the 1980s...
