I lurk in one of my usual shadows, the one cast by the street lamp on the corner of Fern Way and a looming hazelnut tree. From this angle, I have a clear view into Maisie Fletcher’s living room. The woman often talks about making curtains for the narrow window on this side of the house, but she won’t. Like so many other humans, she’s fallen into the inexplicable trap of procrastination.

“All clear.” The words are meant to reassure. They should reassure me after her thorough search. But the alarm system in my brain blares on in perverse persistence, like that DJ at my cousin’s wedding that refused to play anything but EDM. Just because I caught the slightest movement out of the corner of my eye, my brain is convinced that there’s something out there that will harm me. It doesn’t know exactly what, but it has plenty of suggestions all presented in stuttering dubstep: sa-sa-sa-serial killers, ra-ra-ra-rabies, ex-plo-sives. Just wait for the beat drop. Stupid brain.
