The bell jingles and almost immediately there’s movement at my feet. I swerve, knocking into a table, glimpse a second cat and have to hop out of the way, bumping into a couple of chairs. A third cat comes in for the kill. Before I fall flat on my ass for the second time today, a warm hand catches my elbow. Reflexively, I grab the arms in front of me, steadying myself. “You okay?” asks August. We’re standing so close, that I can’t help but look into his eyes. Like really observe them. They’re blue with rings of brown around the irises and currently they’re filled with concern. I don’t like that. It’s disconcerting. “I’m fine,” I let go of soft green stitches and solid biceps to step away from him, which isn’t easy with the way the cats are weaving at my feet.

They’re always too busy asking who I am, and depending on how far things have progressed and how difficult they’re being, why I’m strapping them to a table.

Bright lights and warm cottage vibes banish the foreboding of the night as I step into the lobby. A woman with white hair and a round face sits behind the front desk, arranging deep purple, red and orange flowers in a vase. “Good evening, dear. You must be Kate’s sister.” “That’s right, sister of the woman who is the primary suspect in a local homicide. Speaking of, can you tell me who was present at the inn last Friday or Saturday?” “Terrible segue,” she puts down a flower and replaces it with a pen and notepad, “but I’d rather not see Kate put behind bars, so yes.” “She very well could be the murderer.” The woman waves the idea away with a sun spotted hand. “When you get to my age, you can tell the good ones from the bad ones.” She gives me a sly smile. “Just you wait. Dating gets so much better.”

I haven't shared this WIP here before, but none of my characters embody movement better than Cordelia, coroner by day and masked hero way in over her head by night.
Cordelia spun and pushed off towards Beat. The lardeath swiped at him and he easily dodged, but the one guarding the door caught him. With an unsettling snap, the lardeath swung him away from the tram by his arm. Cordelia rushed forward, catching Beat as he stumbled. “Hey,” she said. “Hi,” he said, trying a smile that looked more like a grimace. “We’ve got to stop meeting like this.” “If by ‘this’ you mean, ‘wounded and in peril’ then yes. Speaking of which. . . ” She grabbed the speaker from his belt. “I’m borrowing this. Okay?” Cordelia didn’t wait for an answer, she locked eyes—locked was a strong word when staring at the eyes of a dead creature—with the nearest lardeath. “Come and get me,” she yelled, skating backward. Her yelling, movement, and the music from Beat’s speaker, all seemed to do the trick. All three lardeaths on her side of the bridge focused on her.

The night sky theme continues inside the shop. Golden orbs hang at varying heights to give the impression of stars against the dark blue backdrop of the walls and ceiling. A stainless steel counter runs along one side of the room. A few shelves of books inhabit one of the corners and tables with cushioned chairs and benches fill the rest of the space. Something brushes against my leg. A mostly black cat with bright orange streaks like lightning branching out against a dark sky blinks luminous yellow eyes at me.
