I am genuinely at a loss for a precedent here. Very, very few states in history ever enjoyed the success of the USA even on a regional level and I just can’t think of any of them dynamiting it all for absolutely no gain

we really probably do need to prepare for the worst in some manner at this point, even if it’s not a given. like a US attack on mexico and greenland, nato collapsing, russia invading poland, and china blockading taiwan. widespread war and reversion to 1800s style colonialism and mercantilism.
