The absence of civil rights we endow children in the face of the unquestioned sovereignty over them we cede to their parents is a crime against humanity.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

I was on a DSA salt training call earlier this week where they said they weren't targeting the tech industry because tech workers benefit from the status quo and buddy I do not think that's a smart strategy

can someone explain to me how RSL is going to do anything at all to curb AI companies from ingesting whatever training data they find?

You may not like that it takes 100 years to pass some watered down social welfare program because of the constitution but that's also what protects us from dictatorship [some dumb slob does dictatorship in 6 months]

so the theory here is what - that CBS decided to silence Colbert by giving him 10 more months to say anything he wants on his show? y'all that makes no sense

I've seen speculation that affiliates want his timeslot and/or that the ad demographics for late night are garbage, both seem plausible

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

re-upping this since my newsletter platform pricing chart is making the rounds again. indie media is hard but it's easier when we're in it together! 💕
btw i’m happy to be a resource for anyone considering making the switch from substack, as someone who’s been through it and has ~a year of experience since switching citationneeded.news to ghost. always happy to share my experience, including as someone for whom this is their primary income.

capitalism is bad because it incentivizes every profit-seeking company on earth to call anything attached to an algorithm "AI" even though they are wildly different technologies utilizing totally unrelated forms of machine learning, literally none of which actually qualify as Artificial Intelligence

Alright I hacked together a quick script to pull your Pocket favorites from the Graphql endpoint. You'll need to give it your cookies from a browser session but it works. Shouldn't be too hard to join to the CSV their data exporter produces.

hey @mozilla.org I was just told by support that there is no way for me to export my favorites list out of Pocket before shutdown - why do you think it is it acceptable for you to sunset the service without functioning data export?

why anyone trust you with our data ever again?

following up with the setup that works best so far:

- on-device wake word, "Hey Mycroft" much better than "Ok Nabu"
- S2T via Whisper running on a Gcloud free-tier box, data sent through a wireguard tunnel

I originally tried Speech-to-Phrase on a pi 4, it struggled with timer durations
Finally ditched my Amazon Echos for Home Assistant's Voice Preview Edition. Setup went much more quickly and smoothly than I was expecting - the mic box was on our wifi in two minutes and I got local speech-to-text & TTS models running in about an hour.

timers, light controls and weather all work!
