Since today is Veterans Day, here’s a piece I wrote ten years ago about the history of the holiday we now mark every Nov. 11.

I was fortunate to write several articles for We’re History, one of @hcrichardson.bsky.social’s great public projects. Go to werehistory.org to read lots of great articles.
The Convoluted History of Veterans Day
November 11 has not always been about honoring the service of all veterans.

Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says.
Trump on Ilhan Omar: "I look at somebody who comes from Somalia...and she comes in and tells us how to run our country. 'The Constitution says this, the Constitution says that.' The whole thing is crazy."

Ukraine's army has confirmed the post below.

Southern Forces spokesman Vladyslav Voloshyn said due to massive assaults, they had to withdraw from Novouspenivske, Nove, Okhotnychy, Uspenivka + Novomykolaivka.

Zelenskyy MUST act decisively. This defence is a total shambles.

..and an update from the Zaporizhzhia frontline.
In its morning report, Russia's MoD also announced the complete capture of Nove and Novouspenivske villages, which were in the grey zone, and I think this is much more believable than the Kupiansk claims.

Postcard from #Montréal.

Bixis under the snow.

I rode my own winter bike to work. Rough sledding, with few of the streets plowed.

And 20 cm on Nov. 11 is a bit much, ‘stie!

Hungry soldiers is not a good idea. These spaces are very cheap because we don't pay enlisted soldiers very much. Many on SNAP, so a double hit.
Millions of servicemembers and veterans rely on the commissary system for basic needs. The tax-free grocery stores offer a substantial savings on many items and also comes with the benefit of the Star Card, a defense system credit card used at the commissary and PX (like a Target/Walmart).

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

This might sound crazy, but travel disruptions at Thanksgiving would have been … good? It would have driven home why we need a functional government. Dems could have capitalized. Instead, they worried more about disrupted travel than people getting thrown off their health insurance. Unbelievable.

Under Schumer's leadership, eight Democrats (Cortez Masto, Durbin, Fetterman, Hassan, Kaine, King, Rosen, & Shaheen) joined the Republicans in moving forward a bill to reopen the government without ACA subsidies—Dems' stated key aim—or any other real concessions from the status before the shutdown.
