…itself spawned. Or another example of, as I’ve been saying a lot lately, all of the fantasy genre being an obsessive attempt to rewrite LotR because it doesn’t sit well with our cultural values; we want to romanticize war, we want clear heroes, we want to equate violence with valour, etc.

To Tolkien, Eowyn having to remain a warrior forever would be an awful and nightmarish thing. Far more horrible than she deserved. Not being able to leave the war behind was Frodo’s tragedy. Eowyn was spared that.

This is yet ANOTHER case of LotR sort of being a deconstruction of the genre it…

Actually I think I am more evicting raccoons than preventing them from entering the premises... and every one of them is named "Bitey".

This type of refactoring, where the benefits are large but also largely invisible, is a real slog. But sometimes you have to do the housework to keep the raccoons from getting into your program. Just envision every piece of obsolete code as a hostile feral trash panda and the work becomes more fun.

I have converted the world map war bits in GearHead Caramel to the new unblocking game loop. I originally wrote that section right after getting Covid brain fog, and it shows. There's only one more use of the old blocking menu interface left to change! #GameDev #PyGame

This used to happen to me all the time first when I got long COVID. It's good that my condition has improved so I only forget my passwords the same amount as everyone else my age.

so many of the small indignities of daily life come from us being denied the ability to tell a rich man in a tech company to fuck off. minesweeper has microtransactions. paid services have ads. the opt out says maybe later. the drive thru is a broken chatbot. your car is an ipad. fuck off! fuck off!

That is a horrifying threat but you can't really say you didn't have it coming.

It's my birthday so by law you have to at least visit the shop and go "wow what a good girl you did this all by yourself" & some local bylaws demand a purchase. I don't make these laws!

Maybe the idea is you can check your door camera remotely. I'm not sure how this is a value add. At least, not enough of a value add to justify the security risk. Aren't there programs that let you access cameras remotely without relying on 3rd party hosting + analysis? I dunno.

Maybe the internet connection is supposed to save videos to the cloud, so if someone steals a package from in front of your door you can see who it was. But a car dash camera can do that with a MicroSD card easy enough.

I think every apartment I've had in Korea has had a closed circuit camera on the front door. So, I'm wondering, what exactly is the purpose of those Internet-connected Ring cameras? Why would you want to give a tech company a camera in your house? Not even snarky, seriously wondering.
