1. Tomorrow is the big college entrance exam in Korea or KSAT or suneung so naturally there are posters up in subway stations directing test takers to test locations, listing which exit to take and how far the school is from the exit. All part of the KSAT #LinguisticLandscape . . . .

Lovely essay here on language learning, translation, AI, and so much more. Very much worth reading in my opinion.
"To translate is not simply to transfer meaning but to attend to differences—of culture, time, thought, expression—that evade perfect alignment"

Brilliant essay by Ross Benjamin on how AirPods & other automated translation tech eliminates what really matters in communicating across languages
The Costs of Instant Translation
AI might soon rob us of the thrill and challenge of cross-cultural conversation.

If it wasn’t a Jets game right now I’d be somewhere in rural Manitoba checking out the northern lights.

They are insane and this is in the city.

But since it’s the 2nd intermission get outside and enjoy the light show for a few minutes.

Very good review of There Is No Antimemetics Division by
@qntm.org which also discusses the amazing SCP Wiki which is a wildly underdiscussed and underexamined writing activity, community, practice, repository, something, in my opinion. Neat stuff!

So there is a big Twitter kerfuffle because of a blogger having trouble at an airport, with a lot going on there, here, and wherever, but it is a good reminder of one of the most interesting #LinguisticLandscape in the world, that of airports! So many signs!

This mural, outside Ganado Feed on Lincoln Ave. in San Jose, urges the people who see it to find resilience in challenging times…in English. But some people in our community might really need to hear that message in another language, too.

The election for university president is coming up and so we have some campaigning on campus these days, but what I find interesting here is the amount of English on these posters, adding a bit more of something to the campus #LinguisticLandscape . . . .
