Why do people desperate for a place of safety want so much to come to the UK?

They may of course have relatives here.

But the main reason is the extraordinary success of the British Empire in convincing people everywhere that Britain was a place of fairness, tolerance and compassion.

Every year, the number of people who die while homeless grows. 1,286 in 2021. 1,313 in 2022. 1,474 in 2023. These are not estimates, but are verified numbers.

1st batch of our own wool has just been delivered from the mill, beautifully spun & in skeins! It isn’t a cheap process, definitely not fast, but there’s something very satisfying knowing which sheep each batch is from, the quality of their lives and how from grass to needles is as it’s meant to be!

Quilts often displayed on clotheslines or windowsills served as secret maps and guides for those escaping on the Underground Railroad.

This is the problem of the NHS as national religion in action.

People will accept immigration to support the NHS, but they will not support immigration to grow the economy so the NHS can be paid for.
When presented economy vs immigration trade-offs, Britons typically opt for economic benefit over lower migration

Those who support requiring large nos of migrants to leave would pick fully staffing NHS over reducing immigration, but economic arguments hold less sway
