Had a conversation with a 19 year old over Christmas; I asked her where she gets her news and she said she doesn't. I asked her where she goes to find out about the world and she said she doesn't. Just...doesn't. Shook me to the core, in part because I should have known this is happening but didn't.

The wife of the 44 year-old man who died this week in Edmonton after waiting 8 hrs in the ER with chest pain was told by hospital security staff she was "being rude"

Are you supposed to just be super calm & polite while your spouse dies a preventable death in the hospital?

If COVID were primarily prevented by handwashing, we'd expect it to surge in water-scarce regions the way true water-washed diseases do.

The fact that it is surging in high-income countries with excellent hygiene is far more consistent with airborne spread than "wash your hands harder"

🚨 Holy s**t. I just went and manually pulled the annual flu totals in Canada. Almost like something happened to make us less able to fight off the flu.

This piece buries the lede:

"While flu-related deaths [in children] are rare, they do happen annually, and three elementary-aged children have already died in eastern Ontario this year."

Get vaccinated. Wear N95s in public. And most of all, don't make the mistake of thinking "it's just the flu."

Theoretically, everyone deserves the right to do what they want to their own bodies.

But in practice, these laws lead to further devaluation of disabled lives. They invariably lead to people choosing MAID because they can't afford healthcare, cajoled into this cheaper choice by an uncaring system.

Oof. Flu A taking off like a rocket in #bcpoli (as predicted, but who needs prevention from @governmentofbc.bsky.social, amitrite?!).

Flu A test ~2X in 1 wk, from 7.4% to 13.8%
COVID going down, RSV up a bit, but still LOTS of both around.

This is the way.
I block most of the negative replies I get from strangers. Doesn't even have to be an insult directed at me, if I'm praising a show and some rando comes into my replies to be a downer about it, I block them. Why wouldn't I? There's no algo here rewarding engagement. Malcontents don't benefit me.

A lot of people don't realize the extent to which the academic process relies on trust. This is why those "sting" operations often work - peer review is good at debating the merits of a given process, analysis, etc. It's not robust to outright liars

AI is particularly well suited to exploiting this
Did you guess "that paper does not actually exist"?

Did you also guess that NOT A SINGLE PAPER IN THEIR REFERENCES APPEARS TO EXIST? (Though I confess I only thoroughly checked for half of them, including databases for the journals.)

Could someone explain to me again why Canada can't fund hospital equipment purchases from taxes instead of relying on charitable donations which may or may not materialize?

This is another reason why we can't have nice things.

As Chantal Hébert said, folks are missing the climate forest for the pipeline trees.

Carney rolled back major climate policies for Alberta, now! In exchange for a lil industrial carbon price increase and the BS that is carbon capture!

Forgetting the pipeline, this is BAD for the climate crisis!
I'm not convinced that wasn't Carney's plan all along. It isn't Ottawa that said no to Alberta. "Now you run along, Danielle, and make friends and get it done." Oh wait, you can't? Oh well then, at least you tried.

I try to stay out of US politics these days, but I do believe Trump's revanchist racial policies animate him and his supporters more than anything else. They want their purified (and poorer) white ethnostate.
The unifying aim of all Trump pronouncements and actions is to trash the constitution and impose a white supremacist militarized autocracy by EO and truth social decree - the latest attack on naturalization and birthright citizenship is an ugly new escalation of that barbaric aim.
