Indeed...it was interesting to watch John Oliver's excellent piece tonight on Trump's de-funding of public media, and then immediately segue into the first episode of Ken Burns' latest opus.
Tonight's PBS premiere of Ken Burns' new series "The American Revolution" doubles as an attention-grabbing statement, months after Trump succeeded in stripping away all federal funding for public broadcasting in the US. The message is clear: "We are still here." 🧵 www.cnn.com/2025/11/16/m...

Politicians have always done this. Vote to defund public media but never miss the premiere or fail to shake everyone's hand.
Burns and his team have held advance screenings of "The American Revolution" across the country, including in DC. Kerger described GOP lawmakers who voted against PBS $$$ waiting in line to shake his hand:

The Harvard Crimson has ID'ed and published the name of a well-known economist who was the subject of emails between Larry Summers and Epstein.

Born in China, she did her B.A. – Ph.D. at Harvard.

The code name that Summers and Epstein used in their emails about her was "peril." What a vile pig.

Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. There’s no vote required if he wants to release them!

The only reason the house was voting was because he refused.

This is an obviously cynical ploy and major news outlets are running whole pieces without pointing this out. He could release them tonight.
If he has nothing to hide he doesn’t need a House vote. He can just release everything.

For thirty years I worked in the post-Soviet successor states in Central Asia and observed over and over again precisely the cycle that Bill Kristol describes. Corruption leads to authoritarianism, directly. The path is utterly predictable.

Kashmir, like Palestine, is an occupied territory controlled in parts by India, Pakistan, & China. In 2019, Indian-occupied Kashmir’s “autonomy” was abrogated & India shut down internet for over a year.

I can reassure the New York Times that networks of mutual protection, and misogynist retaliation efforts that benefit abusive men at the expense of the young women they prey upon, are very much still intact post-Me Too.
This is nauseating: “As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement.” A “Gone With the Wind” framing for sexual abuse and harassment.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people?

One of Trump's objectives seems to have been to provoke a violent reaction from the public. Despite the provocations of CBD and ICE, the public has been nonviolent.
As we reported previously at @zeteo.com, one of the things that made Trump so keen to deploy U.S. troops to Chicago when he did was because he kept seeing coverage of him bumping the brakes the previous time, and didn’t want to give Pritzker a “win” after Illinois Dems mounted heavy resistance
Is this losing? Feels like losing

It is interesting to me how the media seems far less interested in Trump's Murder Memo than you'd expect. Only a few reporters seem to be even trying to get a hold of it, and very few commentators are talking about it. Contrast that with Bush's torture memo, which was a national obsession. Weird.
Trump's illegal murders in the Caribbean just got worse. An internal DOJ memo on the bombings says the victims are waging war on the US, but per NYT, it extensively cites the WH's *own claims* to this effect as evidence!

It gets even darker than that. 1/

Right wing screeching about the “war on Christianity” never includes complaints about secret police raiding houses of worship to rip families apart (or, for that matter, bombing churches in Palestine)
Here’s a story for every national news outlet:

In N.C., churchgoers are literally running into the woods as federal agents descend on the property.

“Inside the church, women and children sobbed as they wondered whether their loved ones had been taken.”

Alice is the gold standard of what Twitter was when it was great - how you could just find these brilliant, remarkable people with the kind of voices that rarely get platformed or taken seriously, and hear about their lives in their own words without intruding on them or demanding emotional labor
Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?

Every “encroachment” in conservative parties in recent years has been worse than the last. The GOP has kept getting more and more far-right extremist. And Fuentes’ white-nationalist nazis are the worst yet.
Republicans are at odds about how to handle the white-nationalist influencer Nick Fuentes’s encroachment into their ranks, @alibreland.bsky.social writes. He asked Fuentes about being the center of a crisis in American conservatism:
The Nick Fuentes Spiral
The reckoning with the white-nationalist influencer’s rise is only getting messier.
