I have this same meal with my family. Sad to see. What an unfortunate event.
Thinking of this photo of Carl & Rob Reiner at dinner that went viral a few years ago. May their memory be a blessing. ❤️❤️❤️

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

Deliberation is under threat. Without common facts and shared epistemic ground, public debate becomes everyone yelling in their bubbles, not collective reasoning. The VDA framework highlights this as a structural fault line.

Verification is under threat. Information supply chains have become fragmented, platform logics favour viral over verifiable, and even traditionally trusted institutions struggle to anchor public belief. If you can’t agree on facts, the rest becomes theatre.

Why this framing? Because the crisis runs deeper than fake news, vaguely defined ideas of loss of trust in institutions, or polarisation. It’s epistemic collapse, when we lose a shared sense of truth, deliberation becomes echo-chambers, and accountability turns performative.

Verification asks: can we reliably establish what is true? Deliberation asks: can we debate and decide fairly together? Accountability asks: can we hold power to account? If one or more of those breaks down, democracy doesn’t just wobble, it hollows out.

I've been working with Demos to turn the Verification, Deliberation, and Accountability (VDA) Framework into a report that lays out how it can be used to diagnose the state of democracy and build solutions around building the capacity for those functions in institutional and public spaces.
🧵 Across the world, democracy isn’t just under pressure, it’s facing epistemic collapse: a breakdown in the shared ability to know what’s true, to reason together and to hold power to account.

A new guest paper by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and @drnataliemartin.bsky.social explores how to fix it.
Verification, Deliberation, Accountability: A new framework for tackling epistemic collapse and renewing democracy

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.
"Jones, 27, is among the residents left at 7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building."
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

The endgame for all of this is constructing a military that will obey orders when ordered to fire on citizens. That's the throughline to half of what Trump is doing.
yeah, this is hegseth straightforwardly announcing that it is free play time for bigots in the ranks. and together with his comments on standards, he clearly wants to purge as many women, black and brown people as he can from the armed services. a white man's military.
Hegseth: "We are overhauling an inspector general process that has been weaponized, putting complainers and poor performers in the driver seat. We are doing the same with the equal opportunity policies. No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complains ... no more walking on eggshells."

Your reminder that they cannot arrest millions of people no matter how hard they try. They lack the infrastructure, they lack the personnel, and the economy would straight-up collapse

They are going to try to scare us by making examples out of a few people, and our job is to not fall for it

Many things are bad. Let go of worrying if you are doing something "cringe". Anyone ambitious and hard-working has been thought of as cringe. Making something new and interesting is often seen by others as cringe. Immigrating is a cringe-filled process. Focus that energy on what is important to you.

We are in very dark times. It’ll take an entire political/social movement, an overwhelming rebuke at the polls, and a new vision of governance to unstick this country from whatever this collapse is.
