Delete that shit right now friends.
Heads up to artists still using Twitter- Twitter is now adding an "Edit image" button under all images posted on the site that allows everyone to feed it into genAI and modify it as they wish with a prompt

I still think it's very simple: the word "generative" is where I draw the line. Spellcheck in your design doc? Sure, go ahead. Copilot to fill out the blanks? Haha NOPE.

The AI dudes try to muddy the waters, of course. As if using any kind of tool gives permission for Gen AI everywhere.
As the backlash to generative AI in video games continues to pick up steam heading into 2026, it'll be fascinating to see what is considered "made with generative AI." Can a dev team say they're not using AI if they're writing design docs with Copilot or using chatGPT to make schedules and budgets?

Having gone through the process with them three times (I liked the writers and wanted to live in Ireland), every negative thing you've heard about Larian's hiring process is not only true, but quite probably understated.

What they demand for a "test" would be considered a prototype at some studios.
Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

A few years ago someone from Larian had an appointment with me at Gamescom and didn't show up.

Must have been a bot.
NEW: I spoke to Larian boss Swen Vincke about their ambitions for their new RPG Divinity, cutting down development time, pressures from Baldur's Gate 3, why BG3 wouldn't have happened without Tencent, how Larian uses generative AI, and much more www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

For our recent project we needed some temp audio early on so I generated it by getting a microphone, doing a voice, and recording it. This was (a) fast, (b) instructive and (c) actually kinda okay to play the game too while still being obviously placeholder
once just to say I tried it I fucked around w/some AI voice generation apps to make some quick temp dialogue; it took dozens of tries to get a take that sounded even close to what I wanted & I had to Frankenstein lines together syllable by syllable. sucked. this sounds like that at a massive scale.

Here are a few short interviews I did at @adventurex.bsky.social for my adventure game podcast. Mostly in German, some in English.

(And if you're wondering: the podcast title translates as "Use Ear With Loudspeaker".)

This is bullshit.

"absolutely no genAI in games" is the middle ground.

"how many years in jail should Sam Altman get for knowingly stealing all data ever" is the somewhat more extreme stance I personally adopt.
"Surely there's a middle ground here?" The CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead says people "jump to extreme takes" when debating generative AI, and that there needs to be more nuance in the discussion.

One issue generally overlooked in the whole screenwriter vs gamewriter, discussion is time.

Beyond anything to do with training, ability, style etc is the amount of time screenwriters get to invest in a script.

Whilst there are time pressures on any writer, the vast amounts of script that-

If you count VO and the orchestra, the credits are over 100 names.
