In a letter to his wife, Caitlin Thomas, dated April 7, 1950, Dylan Thomas wrote: "Vancouver is on the sea, and gigantic mountains doom above it. Behind the mountains lie other mountains, lies an unknown place, 30,000 miles of mountainous wilderness, the lost land of Columbia where cougars live and black bears. But the city of Vancouver is a quite handsome hellhole. It is, of course, being Canadian, more British than Cheltenham. I spoke last night--or read, I never lecture, how could I?-in front of two huge Union Jacks. The pubs--they are called beer-parlours--serve only beer, are not allowed to have whiskey or wine or any spirits at all--and are open only for a few hours a day. There are, in this monstrous hotel, two bars, one for Men, one for Women. They do not mix. Today, Good Friday, nothing is open nor will be open all day long. Everybody is pious and patriotic, apart from a few people in the university & my old friend Malcolm Lowry--do you remember Under the Volcano--who lives in a hut in the mountains & who came down to see me last night... This afternoon I pick up my bag of soiled clothes and take a plane to Seattle. And thank God to be out of British Canada & back in the terrible United States of America."

i am all for legalizing and regulating but you need to *add friction* to these kinds of transactions and contact points where problem gambling can be spotted and addressed

Something that sticks with me: Alice Wong didn’t really gain notoriety for her work until the last decade or so. How many people who use wheelchairs or who have significant medical disabilities does the world write off simply by how we visually perceive them? Farewell, Alice.

What I want to say about Alice is this: we have not decided as a society that we want people like her to live as human beings. Currently, the regime under which she lived & died is closing off the elements that made her extraordinary life possible. Her work is literally being erased.

She was extraordinary, and extraordinarily generous. Alice Wong: I am so grateful to have been alive in her lifetime. She was one of our species' best. She deserved better. My her legacy be for a blessing.

I am gutted to learn of @sfdirewolf.bsky.social (Alice Wong’s) passing. She was always a warm friend, a wonderful spirit, and someone who fostered my own growth. She helped me see that, as a #disabled person with chronic illness, I matter—I am whole. I’ll be posting some of Alice’s work. ❤️ forever

Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.

Thinking today how homelessness runs through this story, through Epstein's (Virginia Guiffre had been homeless before meeting him), and even through Gaiman's (his nanny was sleeping on the beach when Palmer recruited her, and he used threats of homelessness against another victim).

She was 17 and a high school junior in Florida. She was working at McDonald’s. And she was living in and out of a homeless shelter. Hoping to save up to buy braces to fix her teeth, she falsely advertised herself in 2017 as 18 years old on a website that matches men looking for “companionship” with young women looking to make money. What followed would set off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of one of the men she would encounter, Representative Matt Gaetz, the Florida Republican.

There is a famous mantra from the movie Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come." This applies very well to the punishment bureaucracy. It is not the solution to what ails the human spirit, our collective society, or the desperate planet. Never let anyone scare you into forgetting that.
