An anti-car (and pro-people) account focused on Europe. Might occasionally indulge in US-bashing.

Robotaxi companies claiming that their technology will shrink private car ownership are the transportation equivalent of Juul claiming their vapes were only supposed to replace smoking. The cynicism is the same, and it is revolting.

What a ridiculous piece. I've been taking an electric self-driving vehicle to work in Paris for years now. Fewer than 11% of trips are made by cars here, this author heavily misses the point. @dlknowles.bsky.social

The only way to fix housing is to build more. If it is not physically possible, build transit. All other ideas are a distraction at best, including money for first buyers and rent control.

You keep saying this, but this really looks like pre-approval.

It is hard to explain to drivers that most experiences non-drivers have with cars are very negative. To us, they annoy, pollute, threaten and occupy useful space without giving us anything on return. Drivers get the benefits and force upon others the downsides.

London built an entire new road tunnel under the Thames and to pay for it, introduced a modest toll on both it and the pre-existing Blackwall Tunnel.

The result is - inevitably - fewer drivers using both tunnels than previously used just one

I truly don't mind motorbikes, as long as they are electric and don't go over the city's speed limit of 30km/h. But in this case, you might as well get a bike.

There is an extra layer of hell for people who ride combustion bikes loudly at 3 am, though.

A sad reality. Walking didn't decline, it was forbidden.
Walking did not merely decline. It was deterred.

A sure sign of downtown vitality is “heavy pedestrian movement.” When “traffic” is redefined so as to exclude pedestrian traffic, and when walking is pathologized as a source of “delay” to motor vehicles, a city is in trouble.
