* bring more books than you think you need (I brought 68 and sold out in 2 days; wish I'd brought 100!)
* have signage that starts conversations
* have freebies to get people closer
* have pitches ready
* make friends with your booth neighbors

Assessments of the mental state or motive of anyone is meaningless. Such statements often obscure what can be done about things, substituting guess work that ultimately means nothing (their brain broke, something is wrong with them) for practical measures. I thus cant care less.
