This is what I've been saying. The financials are gutting the job market, but it's not being replaced. There's just... less work getting done.
There isn’t much evidence that layoffs are being caused by AI taking people’s jobs.

For big tech, such as Amazon’s recent layoffs, the reason seems to be a combination of cutting headcount to balance increased spending on AI infrastructure and anticipation of (not realized) AI productivity gains.
AI isn't replacing jobs. AI spending is
Big spending on artificial intelligence puts pressure on jobs, as gloomy narratives about the future of work are ironically making new graduates less employable.

While everyone else is on their way to #kubecon, I spent all day working on my home cluster. It'll keep me distracted from all the FOMO.

One of the reasons Marie Kondo's advice made everyone mad in 2018-19 (Apart from Racism™️) was that for many, getting to a point where they can even feel joy takes +5 years of therapy and access to the good drugs.

Of course, Marie addresses this...🧵

saw a post suggesting that "ai does 70% of the work for you" but all i can think about is the study that found "using ai makes you 19% slower"

arxiv.org/abs/2507.09089

so if you handwave the math: ai does 70% of the work and makes the remaining 30% about four times as hard as a result, qed

This perfectly encapsulates how I feel living in the US. The republican party is an insane death cult, the democratic party is 3 corporations in a trench coat, and the "socialists" are just the completely normal left-wing capitalists you'd find in any of 2 dozen European nations.
Europeans recognize Zohran Mamdani’s supposedly radical policies as ‘normal’
Critics of New York City’s mayor-elect have said his pledges of free bus service and universal childcare are unrealistic, but in Europe it’s a given

While they're wasting 90k per second, the rest of the industry is having trouble finding a job, so... where is all that money going?

(Thinking about it, that could, per day, basically employ the entire currently unemployed tech industry)
And finally $91,575.09 a second.

Every second OpenAI loses over $90k. So yeah, not a real business.

According to Social Security, the national average wage in 2024 is $69,846.57

all the math is based on $12billion and 91 days (365/4= is actually 91.25 but whatever, you get the point)

Looks like unemployment is drying up AGAIN. I'm not hearing back from employers despite my efforts. I would like to avoid a disaster and just pay them so they don't start eviction while I look for legal help.

I need $2241.22 total (I have some but not all) 🖤🤎💕💸

Shocked (not shocked) to learn that some arbitrary labelling just hides posts by default.
Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

First go to the hamburger menu in the upper left corner

Remember to live your life such that people don't talk about the abject evils you did when you die.
So many people were detained extrajudicially, were tortured, or died because of Dick Cheney. You can't get to the danger we're in now without everything he did. The weapons he helped forge are ones we need to take away from U.S. presidents forever.

It’s disheartening to see Teen Vogue dissolved into Vogue and its political team let go. For years, it was one of the few mainstream spaces that made room for honest, radical commentary on justice, inequality & the world we actually live in. I’m grateful it gave me a home for so many of my op-eds

This is your regular reminder that #MutualAid is keeping people housed and alive, and you should help if you can.

Also, #FreeLink
The sheer number of #MutualAid posts out there is gut wrenching. A quick look should tell you how badly we are doing as society in general, in taking care of our fellow human beings.

If you're in a good situation, you should go through and help out where you can. It's bad out there.

Public transport often treats bikes as a luxury—or worse a competitor—but without them leaves revenue on the table.

For 25 years, the Dutch have extended the reach of their railways through investments in (300,000) parking spaces and (25,000) shared bikes. The result? A doubling of train ridership.

With soap in my eyes, trying to pull the shower head closer to me by pulling on the stream of water. That's pretty high up there.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? I don’t mean “cheating on your partner” stupid, I mean stupid stupid. Like, once, I had this bubble bath which smelled absolutely delicious, so I took a big glug of it. That kind of stupid. (It did not taste delicious.)
