Exactly 80 years ago this precise moment (8:40am Hamburg time, Nov. 30, 1945), German submarine commander Heinz-Wilhelm Eck and two of his former subordinates on the U-852 were shot by Allies in Hamburg for killing the survivors of a ship they had sunk. Pete Hagueseth needs to lawyer up immediately.
The Peleus War Crimes Trial
After sinking the Greek steamer Peleus in 1944, the captain ordered his crew to attack the survivors, three sailors survived and faced their attackers in a war crime trial.

I’m no statistician, but if you buy your first house in your 30s on a 50-year mortgage, and life expectancy is low 80s, isn’t this just called — rent?

Truly, it’s the racism.

It's bad enough to publish the hit piece but this whole dishonest "who, me? We were just trying to enlighten readers about his fascinating background!" shit is so dishonest and insulting to our intelligence.

Thanks, is that normal Times policy, to leave it to the readers to Google to figure out what the sources' political views are?

This is a defensive, 10-post thread from an NYT boss, and the only thing it truly illuminates is the need for the Times to bring an independent journalist back into the role of public editor.
Our assistant managing editor for Standards and Trust, Patrick Healy, posted on X today in response to feedback on our recent reporting on Zohran Mamdani.

If your leaders keep failing you by being weak, and everyone makes fun of them for being weak, and they lose all the battles they should have won? Then it’s long past time to replace your leaders. because they are obviously very bad leaders. You don’t owe them a goddamn thing.

The DNC really ought to be taking notes on how to run a good campaign from Zohran Mamdani and his team. They probably won't. But they should.
We have gone from the margin of error to the margin of effort.

On the day before the election, we stand on the verge of toppling a political dynasty and winning a city we can afford. But we can only do it with you.

I rarely post personal things. But I need to talk about my 4-year-old niece, Hope.

She has a rare disease. A drug called elamipretide has helped her survive.

But the FDA recently denied its approval.

Now, her health hangs in the balance.

Please share her story & urge the FDA to reconsider. 🧵

It is actually nuts that even when the NYC political establishment was presented with a broad field of talented candidates w/ many ideas, in a time of generational change & anti-corruption, they STILL chose to line up behind scandal-ridden Andrew Cuomo.

It’s cowardice.

Ok I know Suffolk county is a bastion of Repubs but why would they allow their fire departments to be used for ICE? Are the Feds paying them rent at least? Huntington (town super Ed Smyth) officials allowing the racists to take over - yeah, that’s wholly unsurprising. But surprised by Riverhead
ICE agents seen prepping in the parking lot of the Riverhead Fire Department this morning on Long Island.

This comes a week after people in Huntington inquired why ICE was using the FD parking lot there to stage.
