Emma Donoghue
@emmadonoghue.bsky.social
writer of fiction (The Paris Express, Learned by Heart, Haven, The Pull of the Stars, The Wonder, Room, etc), films, plays...
the invaluable @emmadarwinwriter.bsky.social explains the nuts and bolts of writing that many of us who've been working with those nuts and bolts all our lives have never understood (or maybe it's jut me)
Quick heads up that I've taken down the paywall on my Itch of Writing post about which way round speech tags might go. It's usually a supporters-only post, but it's in use in our current Self-Editing course, so I thought others might find it useful: buff.ly/Jj9Ehgf

Back in Dublin to celebrate the launch of The Correction of Taste, and learning yet another lesson from my beloved dad: death is no reason to stop publishing.
💛 JUST LANDED 💛 We're very excited to have finished copies of THE CORRECTION OF TASTE by DENIS DONOGHUE, with a gorgeous foreword from Colm Tóibín ✨

Stunning book design from the brilliant Sarah McCoy Design 📙

I so enjoyed this erudite and immersive response to #TheParisExpress.
Did you catch the Michael Greenstein review of the new Emma Donoghue novel, THE PARIS EXPRESS? “More than a day trip, the novel explores fin-de-siècle culture and politics, the passage of time itself...” www.theseaboardreview.ca/p/train-and-...

Flawless script, #TheBalladofWallisIsland made me laugh and cry simultaneously for an hour and a half
The Ballad of Wallis Island is also a masterclass in small, yet deeply effective, filmmaking.

It is a must see for screenwriters and filmmakers working the low-budget space. Limited cast and locations, the filmmakers maximize everything.

A triumph in every respect.

Okay, here is why I HATE AI. I'm trying to research poems about going into space, or famous quotes about escaping gravity. As the FIRST RESULT, Google gives me this SHITTY poem IT'S WRITTEN ITSELF, like it's fucking Adrian Mole and I'm John Tydeman at the BBC. HATE HATE HATE.

I am one of the authors whom Meta stole (sorry, ‘scraped’) from, by using their books to train Libgen. So I’m biased. But this from @mscaitlinmoran.bsky.social is👌

91 results. That's every book I've published since 1993, in multiple languages, scraped without permission to train AI. They're robbing us in hopes of replacing us.

Remember that a character saying something is not exactly the author saying it.

It’s always bothered me when a character quote is posted like an interview quote. Uh, that was Satan, not Milton.

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

If your boss or company tells you to do something unethical: don't say yes. Make them write it down.
If they won't put it in writing yourself. Send an email (bcc yourself?): "Following our conversation on x date at x time regarding x, I am writing to clarify your directives. According to my notes, you instructed me to A, B, and C. If any of this is incorrect, please advise. I have some concerns."

and Victorian London postal delivery 12 times a day!
One annoying thing about historical research is looking up how long it took to get from A to B in the US by train in 1880 and then looking it up now and realizing it was faster in 1880.
