this is a deeply unsettling fact to have learned at 1am
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

Extremely upset that a throw-away XKCD joke somehow became the organizing principle for the Internet.

Yes, and the rest of my beliefs can be summed up by:

Human heaven not real
Dog hell not real
Human hell real

it is very funny that it feminizes you to admit that you are enjoying something because it's "good" so the entire industry had to collectively work out a secondary characteristic of beer to describe

Please read, share, and subscribe to Torched where we will never define people based on their driving status!

And please also read Anna Zivarts' excellent book "When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency" which is linked in the first paragraph of this story
One-third of Angelenos do not drive
Walking back the "car-free" games promise is unconscionable in a city where the people who don't drive are also the most vulnerable users of our streets

My boyfriend is from Alaska and it is extremely funny how little of a shit he gives about the aurora conceptually.

what's truly hilarious about this is if you ask actual kindergarten teachers what is the best thing i can do to prepare my prek kid? and it’s all "able to put on coat and shoes alone, knows how to stand in line, how to wait their turn, how to follow directions"
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

they don’t even teach math in preschool? sure it’s cool your four year old can count to ten, but his kindergarten teacher is gonna have a hard time with him if he doesn’t learn the most important lesson of preschool: no biting.

This is absolutely the case. Tech Guys of previous generations, to the extent that that category can be read back into the 19th and 20th centuries, were shockingly well-read by modern standards
it’s also notable how the techbros of today really don’t read *books* anymore - this was really not the case for the Tech Guys of earlier generations, far as I’ve been able to tell
certain things associated with intelligence like math and chess get so weirdly fetishized by small minded people who cannot see the forest for the trees
