In America, people being sick makes other people very wealthy

Same goes with crime and incarceration

It's a truly abhorrent system
Average healthcare costs in the US:

Giving birth? $18,000

Cancer treatment? $150,000

One month ICU stay? Between 30k and 150k.

That’s not including copays, deductibles, interest and all the other hoops you have to jump through.

Cost in Canada? $0.

Cost in the UK? $0.

Cost in Australia? $0.

I repeat, at the root of almost every problem our country faces, there is a profit incentive making things worse.
ICE is a profit driver for the private prisons, and large corporations like Amazon, AT&T, Google, Microsoft, and FedEx who spend millions paying off politicians to get ICE contracts.

We can’t abolish ICE until we end corporate and dark money in politics.

ICE is out of control and beyond repair
This agency needs to be stripped down to the studs. Dems should start preparing now.

Here’s the original clip of Ronald Reagan from April 25, 1987, where he delivered a complete and total rebuke against tariffs. Trump's calling Reagan’s words here “FAKE” and “fraudulent.” They’re 100% real. And the original clip is actually far worse for Trump, as much is left out of the ad:

Johnson is such a weasley, sniveling coward. He's also totally full of shit. He could totally swear Grijalva in anytime he wants but he's too much of a coward to do so. Meanwhile, the people of cd7 in Arizona continue to go without representation.
To his credit, Jonathan Karl was ready for Johnson's bullshit and called him out in real time.
KARL: I mean, you could swear in Adelita Grijalva tomorrow, right?

MIKE JOHNSON: No, not tomorrow. We couldn't. We wouldn't.

Great thread about manufacturing and consumption in America.

Our lifestyles are propped up by exploiting cheap labor. Even if we wanted made in America, most could not afford the cost.

The modern American life is out of balance, unsustainable, and built on sand.

We have so much work to do...
This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵

At its core, civil disobedience was never intended to be radical — it was always designed, in times such as these, to expose the radical violence of civil obedience and to light the way to collective refusal to participate in that violence.

I hope our country finds a peaceful path forward, but I worry that things are going to get much worse.

Violence is ultimately a failure of communication, and Trump and his allies have made it pretty clear that they're not interested in dialogue - just power and control.
Pay attention. Something dark might be coming.

The murder of Charlie Kirk could have united Americans to confront political violence. Instead, Trump and his anti-democratic radicals look to be readying a campaign to destroy dissent.

1/ Here's what's happening.
Stephen Miller: "The last message that Charlie Kirk gave to me before he joined his creator in heaven was he said that we have to dismantle and take on the radical left organizations in this country that are fomenting violence. That was the last message that he sent me ... we are gonna do that."

This Labor Day, a reminder that strong unions, fair wages, and safe working conditions don’t just honor workers—they strengthen our democracy and economy.

That’s the vision we carry forward at Roosevelt 💪
Wages are not keeping up with the cost of living. We cannot tackle this piecemeal or leave this up to just business owners.

Good jobs & strengthening worker power are democratic & economic imperatives. rooseveltinstitute.org/publications...

I'll say it again, at the root of almost every problem our country has, there's a profit motive incentivizing bad action.
Private equity looted 3 Connecticut hospitals. Services cut, nurses buying their own supplies etc. They will do it to your hospital if we don't stop this trend right now.

This was really helpful in understanding how quack scientists manipulate data and publication to make misleading and demonstrably false claims.

TLDR: Vaccines don't cause autism and the "scientific evidence" that says they do is a circle-jerk of deception by bad-faith actors.

Our country really needs a service corps in which young people give back to the country and receive educational and other benefits in exchange.

At the same time, I agree we should better recognize service to our country other than the military.
"You're waiting to get on an airplane and you go, any active duty service member can now board. And if that would apply to people like AmeriCorps City...there are a lot of young people who never get that kind of respect." What if "veteran" meant more of us?
