The core of Trumpism is hatred. But whereas Trump hates basically everyone, in a totally unfocused way, the kind of fucking idiot interviewed in these NYT stories hates a more specific set of people. The problem is that it’s worth it to them to hurt millions others, to get to hurt those they hate.
These people are just crazy. Trump gets up and says "MASS DEPORTATIONS MASS DEPORTATIONS MASS DEPORTATIONS" and they're like "he probably means a path to legal status for deserving immigrants"

Another part of this is that even if people see themselves as being pressed financially, they will make sacrifices and not even complain if they think they are part of a righteous cause. Rightwing dipshits do this too, look at all the idiots blowing up their Nikes or whatever.
You can literally create or disprove inflation for most people by cherry-picking a couple goods that have taken the price trajectory you prefer and talking about them a bunch. If the person finds you politically synaptic they will nod along enthusiastically.
