What’s objectionable here isn’t the political claim, although that’s wrong too. It’s national leaders behaving like the worst, smuggest jerk you’ve ever met, and clearly loving it. It’s a repulsive way of acting! In a movie you’d instantly know he’s the bad guy!

I ended up turning this into a little bit of a thread, because I sincerely want to understand why so many of the people who could do something about this endless parade of horrors are choosing to enable and endorse it all through inaction.

Beyond the fact that, in practice, what Jon Favreau demands almost always means “abandon the rights of the most vulnerable groups,” it is also based on a deeply flawed, static understanding of what “public opinion” is and constitutes a complete abdication of political leadership and deliberation.
