This is due to a law signed by Ronald Reagan and has nothing to do with this shutdown fight.

But consider this...

Emergency Medicaid spending in 2023 cost $3.8 billion — just 0.4% of total Medicaid spending.

Now what about the $20 billion taxpayers are giving to Argentina?
Leavitt: "When an illegal alien goes to the emergency room, who's paying for it? The American taxpayer."

We didn’t talk about anything that happened lately, it was mainly just talking about what we do for work and he was respectful and I was too. He gendered me and my friend right, I showed interest in his talk about tariffs and auto parts, and then we clanked beers and yelled for our team.

Seemed relevant today somehow.

Again: Faith leaders *themselves* have long also criticized "thoughts and prayers" rhetoric — including leader's Leavitt's own Catholic tradition.

Here are some examples from the past 24 hours, including a statement from Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (Catholic nuns) on the shooting.

Trump doesn't seem to see that some people are still immune to his threats.

Jack White criticized Trump's Oval Office decor. The White House then called White a "washed-up, has-been loser... masquerading as a real artist." And White, undeterred, posted an absolutely blistering takedown in response.

This analogy doesn’t even work because the early internet was distributed and chaotic, with a bunch of organic development, while LLMs run through a couple of specific gatekeepers with widely known ideological commitments, who are already facing political pressure.
Whenever someone gets mad at me for questioning the net usefulness of AI and says something like “you’re like the people who didn’t want to use the internet”—with love, I was born in 1997, and my life growing up online is all the evidence I need that we should handle AI differently than we are now
