Some of today's birds. There was A LOT of activity in the forest right before the snow started. 🪶
Red-bellied woodpecker. Black and white striped/spotted body, red back of the neck. Northern flicker. White belly with black spots, grey body with black bars, black mustache, red back of head, v-shaped marking on chest. Hairy woodpecker. A Eurasian Treecreeper clings vertically to a tree trunk. Its brown-streaked back blends with the bark, while soft lighting reveals subtle detail in its white underside. I dislodged the thing that was stuck in the snake’s throat. It was a red-belly newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) which is known to have tetrodotoxin. The snake probably succumbed to the toxin while trying to eat. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Herps #Snake #Newt

Dead snake and dead newt. The snake has large leopard markings with black rim and black dot inside. There is black line on the side of the head. The newt has bright red-orange belly with brown markings.
