I'm sharing this because sharing an NYT story about this outweighs my dislike of the publication.

We have known for months because of data outside of Japan that this year's flu season was going to be bad but we have an HHS secretary that hates vaccination and so voila.
“New York City’s syndromic surveillance system, which collects information about every patient who visits an emergency room, reported 9,857 visits for “influenza-like illness” last week. That was higher than in the worst weeks of the 2017-18 or 2024-25 flu seasons, both ranked as “high severity”

Apparently this is a youtuber trend. The person who did this was hoping to get a reaction to put online. Instead their family was just embarrassed.
Magas: our views are so oppressed

Magas at holiday party: yells out that a black woman liberal was assassinated

Everyone else: oh no!

Calling out a fascist for taking a hypocritical position is easy. It's also a complete waste of time. Fascist rhetoric is aesthetics— pathos, never logos.

You'll never get anywhere pointing out a fascist's hypocrisy. Fascism is not to be debated, it's to be smashed. Get comfortable using power.

Will they move to the same imaginary place all the NYC billionaires threatened to move after Mamdani got elected?
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

Saw a Ukrainian tiktoker clarify that he uses the collective when saying this—suggesting all Ukrainians think this. I don’t speak Ukrainian so cannot confirm, but it would track.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to wish Russian President Vladimir Putin dead, saying “May he perish” in a Christmas Eve address.

Not to mention, for most of Sinatra’s life, he wasn’t considered white because he was an Italian-American. Or the fact that he produced a short after WWII about not hating your neighbor because they are different.
Imagine watching Sinatra, son of Dolly & Antonini born in Genoa & Sicily, respectively, and Martin, son of Gaetano & Angela, born in Montesilvano, Italy & Ohio respectively, (Angela to parents born in Monasterolo, Italy), and crusading against the value of children of immigrants to the U.S.

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

One of humanity’s best ideas ever was taking the darkest time of the year, as cold temperatures set in, and doing celebrations with lights, loved ones, generosity, and food.

Various cultures independently came up with something along those lines, and others picked it up.

Fantastic idea, people.
