The thing that will save BBC (News) is empowering it to be a critically thinking institution, which produces significant journalism. It is part of the same thing that has seen the long-running show HardTalk cancelled, BBC Parliament’s funding slashed, the coverage of party conferences reduced to a shadow of what they once were, Newsnight’s investigations pared back, and dozens of other retreats from quality journalism. And that has happened because from 2016 to 2022, the BBC faced both financial and political pressure to do so. The big mistake, I think, that many of the corporation’s rightwing critics have made this week is seeing this primarily as about the BBC’s political bias or the private views of its journalists. But it’s hardly surprising that a broadcaster that has faced pressure not to give too much weight to expert economists on Brexit has also rebuffed historians complaining about history programmes in which polemicists were preferred as guests and talking heads.

Absolutely excellent, eviscerating piece (as usual from Lewis). Explains perfectly (1) though sloppy editing Newsnight merely stated a true fact that Trump caused Jan 6th; (2) how a culture of fear of the right wing political class and super rich has caused an institutional capture by stealth
This story, a relatively minor editing mishap, has become an obsession of the Mail, the Telegraph and the Times/Sunday Times. It is hardly new that these newspapers will use any weapon available to beat the BBC. It is newer that much of the media takes its cues from now the now far-right X, which skews coverage even further. What is also new, is that this last year, we have become accustomed to the US/UK media space increasingly fusing, to the point now we have the President of the United States threatening to sue and effectively bankrupt our national broadcaster, and being cheered to the rafters by British “patriots” on the cultural right for doing so. Of course Nick Robinson is right to say that it is a campaign to destroy the BBC itself, now topped with the presidential seal. And the tendency to move right is always stronger than left, because there is terror of the right in a way the BBC does not possess of liberalism or the left. Do we seriously believe anyone inside New Broadcasting House fears the Green Party? Or Labour? Just ask yourself, would the BBC champion a presenter who was consistently asking robust questions about the effect of the recent Supreme Court judgment on trans rights? Or would they be more likely to champion someone who was clearly gender critical? Charles Moore made a comment on the Today programme this morning that only someone who had never worked for Corporation could make: that all its biases come from a liberal direction. No- rather the only complaints it fears are from a conservative one.

My statement on the funding deal to reopen government, protect federal employees, and vote to protect health care:
"I have long said that to earn my vote, we need to be on a path toward fixing Republicans’ health care mess and to protect the federal workforce. This deal guarantees a vote to extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which Republicans weren’t willing to do. Lawmakers know their constituents expect them to vote for it, and if they don’t, they could very well be replaced at the ballot box by someone who will. This legislation will protect federal workers from baseless firings, reinstate those who have been wrongfully terminated during the shutdown, and ensure federal workers receive back pay, as required by a law I got passed in 2019. That’s a critical step that will help federal employees and all Americans who rely on government services. I’ll keep working towards a long-term government spending plan that includes critical priorities to support Virginians and funding for Virginia community projects."
